Yes. Soap and water is best if done properly. I think a lot of people believe sanitiser must be superior because it's often protocol in hospitals. But that has only become the case because it's been nearly impossible to enforce proper and frequent handwashing.

Staff just can't be relied upon to do it between every patient etc. Sadly they are always short of time and if you could force them to wash properly it would take them so many minutes/hours in the day that you'd have to hire more staff to make up for it.

If his hands are actually dirty, hand sanitiser (homemade or otherwise) is not really good enough. He'll really need soap and water.

I was wondering if one could substitute. I checked out vanilla essence and mouthwash, but neither have a high enough alcohol content to do the job (60% is required). Whisky won't do the job either. Apparently there are some.lemon essence products strong enough, but not the common supermarket variety.

One could do well with a strong garlic essence. It would do a double job of preventing coronavirus.

Hoarding is a real issue in the Innerwest, a little old lady had picked up 6 spatchcock and a few blocks of Parmesan from her IGA. Some people have their priorities right.

I considered suggesting that he keep water, soap etc in the back of the ute at all times. But it seemed too complicated to him (I think he might believe I'm exaggerating the risk). This is for just when his hands are essentially clean (only been to Bunnings to pick something up or been to a client's place in posh areas to inspect their antiques). So it is really for clean hands that might have touched virus on a surface. I gave him one bottle of sanitiser (the proper one) and a packet of wipes. Whether he'll use any of it is another thing. By the way, the hand sanitiser recipe I got from the WHO site so it's fair dinkum!.
This is the recipe to make 10 litres (I'll have to use the calculator to make my small amount):

    Isopropyl alcohol 99.8% x 7515mls
    Hydrogen peroxide 3% x 417 mls

    98% Glycerol (glycerine) 145 mls

Now of course they're saying sanitiser will be back on the shelves irregularly but that was not clear when I was shopping the other day. Thanks so much for your input, though - it's very useful!

I wonder why they don't sell spatchcock at my IGA?

Anyone with a garden patch at home should also stock on seasonal seedlings and plants. Also, it's a good incentive to start a Garden patch.

When will anyone who has stockpiled oats realise how bland and tasteless they are?

(Mild self-interest, I've run out and use them daily).

Samuel Johnson's 1755 definition of oats:
A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.

Have enough kids cereals to last us all winter. Some packs have an 1/8th in them...been that way for several months.

My daily breakfast and been the case for over 7 years or so and still love it. I add honey or molasses to sweeten a bit and plenty of sweet spices for flavour(cloves, cinnamon,nutmeg...). Generally have a solid 8-10 kilos stored at home at all times
