Have you read much on asteroidal impacts and the earths inability to defend them at present?

You've been watching to many movies - yes asteroids hit all the time but think you need to revisit your risk equation ... last big one wiped the dinosaurs out around 66 million years ago.

As for exploration - There are 72 government space agencies already in the world - 14 have the ability to launch rockets - 6 have heavy launch capacity (human payload) - the USA with NASA, Europe China, India, Japan, Russia ... not to mention all the private companies like Virgin and SpaceX.

List of government space agencies - Wikipedia

So, explain to me again why - when the reasons to "why not" are so eloquently explained above - we need yet another (asides from an ego thing)?

Not to be facetious, but Perth had a near miss last night!

I don't have a problem with them doing what they are doing, as much as I have a problem with them making a new agency to do it. Any work which had been done already had been done under the auspices of other agencies, possibly the air force, and there was no need to spend the money to duplicate functionality to create a new agency.

In ten years time, you might see that the new agency has done certain things of benefit. You would have still seen the same benefits from whatever agancy has been doing the work until now.

It's not as if nothing has been done at all, any the military have suddenly decided to start to do something.

The Russians used to have a separate space force, but in 2015, it was merged back together with the air force in order to provide greater efficiency

I had to look up what you meant - I started with the footy results.

There was a bright flash in the sky, presumably some sort of meteor.

That's probably not on topic, as this wouldn't come under the auspices of a space agency, even if it was space junk.

Hi Lizzie, it is not all about launching rockets. It is about defending space assets and infrastructure, defense against asteroidal impact.

There have been more recent impacts that could have disastrous consequences if they hit populate areas.

Okay - a biggish one 110 years ago ... but no human killed in recorded history.

The Probability of Collisions with Earth

Maybe there are just to many humans nowadays. As for space assets getting hit - they are at greater risk from space junk than any asteriod ... and what would be your suggestion anyhow ... some sort of video game type ray gun zapping anything bigger than a teacup?

    Asteroid-Satellite Collision Probability

Yep - my fav movie is Independence Day ... and a Trekkie from way back ... but still don't buy into the hype

I was referring to other countries attacking our satellites as an act of warfare. Wouldn't of thought it was that far fetched.

Odds are slim but there is clearly evidence that they have hit so nothing to say they wont hit again. We dont need a big one to hit a populated area to cause massive destruction.

Intelligence agencies think that China and Russia may already have a satellite with this capability

Mysterious Satellite Sparks Concerns That Russia Has Developed A Space Weapon

The Tunguska explosion in Siberia 1908 was thought to be a meteorite, lucky it was in an isolated area. Very mysterious what happened there.

Not really - a large meteorite, large shockwave from air explosion, further smaller meteorites explode behind it, super-heated permafrost.....trees blow over.

    .... yes and this....

Who would have thought Virgin Galactic....

Virgin Galactic's Historic Space Trip Heralds a Coming Age of New US Human Spaceflight Leaps

So what will the next 20 years bring????
Probably be too hard to comprehend for us all, certainly for me. What humans have achieved to date is Mind blowing really

I predict there will also be more private players in this arena, wanting a bite of the cheese

Referring to your first post and pointing out that the race is on and this is not as absurd as some would think

Whoever gets this right will commercialise this, why billionaires are pumping money into this area/research. Amazon etc
