I heard there are heaps of hipsters in Detroit now. And the empty factories are now hipster hangouts where you can get your beard trimmed and have an environmentally friendly coffee.

Correct. Its a fine line between ' timing the market' vs predatory/vulture behavior ..sometimes they are one and the same...not illegal though in most countries.

I've been going to Adelaide regularly my whole life as my family live there. (Also lived in Whyalla for 4 years).

Adelaide is a bit behind the eastern states, however the growth over the last 10 years is very noticeable (including the water quality). It's a city coming into the 21st century and has so much to offer outside of manufacturing. It's a beautiful city and is surrounded by tourism hotspots in the barrossa and Clare valleys.

I agree regarding jobs, I am moving there next weekend and it has taken me much longer than expected to find an appropriate well paying job (might have taken less if I was less fussy).

I've been shopping for a new ppor and the market I'm looking at is moving quite a bit.

I'd hardly put Adelaide in the Detroit category.

A lot of people would be moving to Adelaide to look for work.
We'll see, but I don't see the unemployment rate over there looking good for quite some time.

This has been going on for over 100 years - nothing new. Migrants would go to Adelaide initially tgen head east to the gold fields in the 1800's.

You must like classic beers like Fosters and Victoria Bitter.

It isn't just Whyalla. I believe Alinta are still forging ahead with the closure of the Coal-Fired Power Station in Port Augusta. The Smelter in Port Pirie needed quite a bit in handouts not so long ago, though not sure how its running now.
Then obviously you also have the car manufacturers, ship-building industry, etc...A lot of the industrial base is being withered away.

The government has some really tough decisions on its hands on what it wants the state to be about.

Detroit is a good example of impact of erosion of industrial base. It's population at peak was 1.85 million. It has since lost more than the population of Adelaide.

By the way re Adelaide being the next Detroit... I am no bull on the SA economy and I would not be surprised in a further increase in the unemployment rate, along with price falls in housing at some point as a result, but keep things in perspective. Here are some stats I looked up the last time I saw the comparison made:

    Detroit 1978:

250k (auto industry jobs) / 4.4m (population) = 5.7% of the population employed by the auto industry.

Based on projected job losses: The real value of our automotive manufacturing industry | Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries

    Adelaide 2015:

    6.6k (auto industry jobs) / 1.25m (population) = 0.53% of the population

    Melbourne 2015:

    33k (auto industry jobs) / 4m (population) = 0.82% of the population

I mean surely there would be some jobs just jobs that people don't want to do such as low skilled jobs ..security, super markets, commission type of work...

Considering the other 92.3% of workers are employed in South Australia - yes there is.
