    Hi all,

is there anyone here with links or close ties to South Africa? The recent news (and imagery) coming out of there seems extraordinary. Will this lead to a total break down of the place - or, how will the authorities get this mess under control?

I’ve even seen imagery of large groups of police getting in on the looting action too….

Between that and the large protests in Cuba, the COVID crisis in Indonesia and SE Asia (and here as well) etc etc etc…it just seems that the world is becoming very nervous and strange.

For students of history this is completely normal to be happening in those countries with their socio-economic profiles when a crisis like COVID hits. A horrible shame, as nobody chooses where they are born.

However, anyone that thinks Australia isn't gonna have it's pick of the best immigrants in the world migrating here in the next few years (assuming we weather the vaccine debacle) seeking to escape trouble in their homelands (From SA, Hong Kong etc.) is in for a rude surprise. Hope government has the foresight to make the business environment favourable for these people (and locals) and we could be looking at a Golden Age here.

Who knows…. It’s not good. Crime in many developing countries has significantly increased due to COVID - higher unemployment and no/little government support has resulted in some very desperate times and people.

True, lockdowns have done an incredible amount of damage, maybe not so visible in Australia but millions of people have been plunged into poverty and starvation.

Awful for everone in south africa, especially the poor. The concerning thing from an australian perspective is the stranglehold the left have on our media and education with the "white man is bad" narrative. Cuba, china and south africa style global events are underreported because they dont align with the woke agenda. The left in the west has elevated identity politics over socio economic concerns which is a large factor behind the continuation of policies that increase the wealth gap in australia. Increased disparity combined with increasing hatred of western values arent a fertile base for social and economic stability.

I am not sure what the definition of 'failed state' is, i think South Africa still holds a reasonable position in the troubled continent.

    It is terrible to witness.

But if at the heart of it is democracy and the rule of law (didnt they just jail an 'ex' for corruption) then failure is not quite there yet.

What they do have (as does many parts of Africa) is extreme poverty and violence.

I think the poster child for failed states is Afghanistan. Although Yemen comes up at the top (bottom really) in this analysis.

The global situation in 2021 is not great. But in all honesty it hasn't been great for a while, the Arab Spring seems to have passed us by. The emergence of China. And poverty all around.

Perhaps the pandemic has helped global cooperation a little?

Murdoch is the exception to the rule, and brings a little bit of balance thank goodness.

South Efrica? Look at what's happening here in Australia in terms of pay and working conditions. There's Nazism in the work place.

Overworked and underpaid and treated like garbage. A lot are stuffed socially as well. You need to be a millionaire to take the family from the west of Sydney to the beach for a picnic.

With all the tolls, parking fees and expensive food etc. A family day at the beach is an important event. A few beers, some snap shots for the album or the office desk, great memories.

It's not good what's happening in Oz. Uber and the govt have destroyed the honest hard working cabbie who dreamed to one day own his taxi plate. Then there's these underpaid food delivery drivers working in a dangerous rush for peanuts.

A point will be reached where people will say enough is enough.
