@radson My understanding is that there is consensus among scholars that Jesus existed historically. There are many references to the man in historical texts. There is also reference to his being crucified. It's the incidents in his life over which there is argument amongst scholars. Obviously, his rising from the dead is one of those occurrences.

Many scholars now believe that Mary was his wife. She was 'turned' into a prostitute after the fact. In reality, she was a wealthy woman who supported Jesus, who gave her a prominent role in spreading his message. Peter was extremely unhappy that Mary was loved by Jesus and the disciples expressed resentment about this. It was Mary who was told to give the apostles the message that Jesus had resurrected. This placed her at the centre of the movement and a leader. Texts show that Peter opposed her leadership, and he won out. After the death of Jesus some say she went to Egypt.

Possibly, its one of those things I have put in the too hard basket to care or research further. I understand the historicity of JC only starts with texts written more than 100 years after his supposed death.

@radson, yeah, apparently they do start a long time after his death.

lol where did you dig up these theories from.

I would love to see the supporting documents, because unless they unearthed a heap in the last 4 years since my studies then there is exactly "0" support that Jesus existed.

So little support in fact that Christian's modified, and were shown to modify, previous historical accounts (Josephus) to falsely include mention of Jesus.

    Pretty dodgy stuff.

The resurrection story of Jesus was told many times in different religions before the "Jesus" character came along.

    Mithras, horus, etc... etc... etc...

Not an original story at all. And not a factual story either. Just a story, with no historical support.

You know in the Bible it never actually says Mary Magdalene was a prostitute.

Yes. I believe it says that Jesus 'cast demons' out of her. It was later she was turned into a wanton woman, a prostitute. Easy to extinguish and erase what a woman has done when you paint her as a whore.

The young god who dies and then resurrects is a major theme in the world's religions. I think the first account was the Sumerian Inanna who descended into 'the Great Unknown', down through the fissures of the earth, where her evil sister Ereshkigal lived. There Ereshkigal hung her on a hook. Inanna then rose again.

The theme was repeated in Greek mythology with Dionysus, Persephone and others, and then again with Jesus. Persephone would be stolen by Hades every year. When she descended into Hades the earth would be barren (winter). She would rise again in Spring.

The young redeemer god was a recurring theme. Osiris was another. This is the myth that was invented to explain the seasons.

Bible college for a year. Lol that made me an atheist. Then studied religion and philosophy at uni but that was just an elective. Ended up with bach psych science degree.

I did study a heck of a lot in my own time though, as you could imagine going from training at bible college to becoming an atheist was a big learning experience.

Then there are the paintings in the caves by nuns and monks in Cappadoccia where John and Mary are said to have fled to.

Its tough when your family strongly believes in religion. Out of my entire family (6) I am the only one that isnt full on Christian. Out of my siblings partners and kids (16) only two others are not full on Christian.

Here's a question as this topic seems to have stalled.

What's harmed humanity more (1) Violence inspired by the Muslim religion. (2) Or the systematic child raping and subsequent cover ups fostered by the Catholic religion?
