Yeah - you'll start feeling good again once the dollars start to add up. I guess you've gotta go through the sad times sometime. Good luck with the packing.

You are well and truly due a fair break after everything you have tried.

I'm sure all the holiday letting preparations helped with the sale of the house - so not totally wasted. Normally so much effort goes in to getting a house ready for sale anyway.

The market for $1,000 a night places must be pretty limited anywhere around there - I could only imagine it with a few families banded together. I'm spitting chips about $150 per night in Brisbane :)

The roadworthy is a great initiative - once people have their car there it is so much more convenient to get any required repairs (needed for rego) done straight away.

    Thanks TB.

Yep; the r/worthies - we get approx 3 inquiries per week on average, and send them elsewhere to get sorted.

So, allowing say; $500 per r/w check for extra repairs on top, plus the r/w inspection fee of $180 - there's probably $2k we are not getting per week.

It's not all beer and skittles though; the set up and Certificates required take time and dollars (at least I've got the dollars now), and the Staff have to be up to speed with quals to conduct the inspections and repairs of course, and the checks and steps required to protect yourself from unscrupulous customers trying to get dodgy r/w's on their sh*tbox cars is ever-present.

The disgruntled car owner is the other side effect of all this; we see it all the time - folks come in with their r/worthy inspection sheet from elsewhere, with list of defects to be repaired, and are outraged at the cost and extent of the repairs required to get signed off for the r/w Cert..

They are often of the opinion that not much is wrong with the car, and shouldn't need all this work, but unfortunately, the rules and requirements these days are very stringent.

But hey; it's a better proposition that what's happening right now.

Sound good - the roadworthy inspection in NSW is a set fee of $34.95

Always have something that needs doing though.

$180 for an inspection sound pretty good for you.

This includes the follow-up inspection to check that the repairs have been completed - probably approx 1.5-1.75 hours all up.

Doesn't sound like that much time should be required, but now you have to take photos of virtually everything, the bookwork etc.

I thought of you this morning :) My car is getting repairs which will take over a week. So I went next door to the panel repair people and hired a car. I have done this a few times. They have a small Nissan auto they hire out at $55 a day. While I was collecting it another woman came in to hire it while her car was getting panel repairs next week.

    Don't tell my wife. :D

Is this the Ashley Maddison thread? ;)

Yes, have thought of the rental car aspect.

Previously it was impossible as you know due to the cashflow crisis.

Now I can revisit it, but I let go the vacant lot next door at the end of the first 5 year lease (couldn't afford the rent on it any longer) so I haven't the space to store them.

We often get the workshop filled with cars which are staying over for a few days (like yours is right now), so the rentals would have to live outside somet of the time - bound to get stolen/vandalised etc (the yard is not really secure).

Also, we don't get a lot of enquiry for a rental car option - it's a demographic thing - and most of our customers are locals which we give lifts to if they need them.

I occasionally lend my ute to regular customers who are stuck for a vehicle, and free of charge, but it's very rare to get the enquiry.

I could renegotiate the lease on the vacant land again (it's still vacant), but I'm not real keen on going into debt for cars for rentals, store them outside, pay rent on the land, and maybe have them sit there for most of the time....might be a nice "warm and fuzzy feeling" service that sounds great, but makes me lose money.

Maybe possible, but probably not in reality - you need a hoist to inspect underneath, take off wheels to inspect brakes and so forth, and you need somewhere to do the work.

You can only do it on someone's private land - not public land.

Even the RACV - won't work on cars - they will tow you to their repair centre.

They do minor repairs such as flat batteries and tyre changes etc, but that's all.

Just the set-up i saw today in NZ ,,they had some sort of fold down ramp on the back of the truck, and as i don't know the "WPHS" over in this country it might not be legal in Australia also but you have to give it to Kiwi business ideas from what i have seen so far in this country they think outside the box..imho..

I think a flatbed truck, with a hydraulic ramp at the back for cars to drive onto, and a hoist constructed into the flatbed would work....something of the size of the flatbeds the RACV and private towing companies use currently.

Sorry I haven't kept up with the thread - Why aren't you doing roadworthy already? Is it because of equipment you don't have? Will this come from proceeds?

When i took over the business from the previous owner, I masked him about this.

His reply was; "Nah; too much grief and too easy to make enemies."

Of course; this was at a time when the business was running along nicely; he had no debt and didn't need the cash, really.

I have thought about doing them since the turnover and profits started to shrink, and I even did the Roadworthy Licence Course and passed it..

But, then we started to have the dramas with a particular Staff member as many would remember from a thread over at SS (which I later had removed by the Mods).

The whole thing fell by the wayside, and then we totally ran out of money to spend on anything other than trying to stay afloat. The set-up cost is about $5k or so - which doesn't sound like much, but I really could not spare a single cent; hence selling my house recently.

After our PPoR settlement, I will be able to run a surplus of finds quite quickly in the business, so I will be able to finance the equipment, or even pay for it with cash.

Whats the danger or risk with rwc?

Other then dodgy people i would have thought on top of the rwc fees. Youd get turnovee for the wheels and breaks and any other work you might get

The only danger is from the dodgy car owners as you say; folks who are angling to get a cheapie and dodgy r/w to get their crapbox on the road....the danger of your mental state being destroyed by having to deal with ***** bogans and their mingy step-toe mentality.

A decent probability of having to deal with too many disgruntled owners who find out their $400 Commodore will need $2k worth of repairs to get it over the line.

Other than that; as you say; the R/w fees and the repairs.
