My lovely tenants in my city units asked the PM to send a pest controller because...rats. Which she did of course because eewh. They laid some baits.

Turns out next door have chickens and this has attracted the rats due to the food scraps. So the PM rang BCC to lodge a complaint.

2 months later another tenant can’t use his computer - because the rats are in the ceiling eating through the cables. Another trip for the pest control guy, plus a bill from the electrician. This time the tenant rang the council to complain.

I can see this turning in to a long drawn out saga, not to mention the cost the tenants don’t deserve vermin.

    Any suggestions?

Were the chickens approved through the body corporate?

    Ratsak every morning

In your neighbour’s coffee. Whoa settle down datto, that wouldn’t be legal. Better just follow the directions on the packet.

Loads of Ratsak sprinkled over their yard...just lob it over. Hopefully that controls them.

    Would that harm the chickens?
Anyway, here's a pic of a long haired mouse in my sister's garden. Enjoy! :(

    No but the rats were.

Council has conditions about keeping of chickens - they need to be a set distance from any dwelling (pretty hard to meet in most domestic situations eg 15m from any house. Keep complaining to council by email to confirm your phone calls.

Of course it would. But the owners should get the message that no one else loves their free-ranging chickens.

I wonder if the tenants are seeing rats or if there might be mice too (or instead)? Mice also chew things.

I suggest laying some traps, & block up access holes as much as possible.

if there is an underfloor space, throw a few ratsak packets under there every now and again.

Rodents do get inside houses - and it may not all be related to the chickens.

Has anyone talked to the neighbours about it?

I'd avoid throwing ratsak packets anywhere. Use a proper rat trap so you don't accidentally kill any possums.

Our pest man put "Possom proof" rat baits in our roof, and we ended up with three dead possums in the roof. I felt awful. We love possums and had no plan to harm any. Just wanted the rats out of our roof. They also were living under our back rooms, so we couldn't put rat baits there either.

Ah! That complicates things. I imagine you'd just have to have pest control out to exterminate and deny access to the rats as best possible.

I would try and count how many chickens they have, and check what the limit is with the local council.
In my municipality, residents can keep up to 4 poultry without a permit.

Also discuss the problem with the neighbour so they can cooperate with the pest control and remove any unwanted food scraps from the garden.

Follow up the council and find out if any action has been (or can be) taken about the chickens. If there is a vermin problem from the chickens, they need to be told about that as well.
