    Great. I got a refilled 2021 Chateau Lafite Ureen. Was a nice drop. They don't call it **** for nothing lol.

    Just to add from the font of useless info I have

    Broccoli is a man-made vegetable

    It was bred out of the wild cabbage plant, Brassica oleracea . It was cultivated to have a specific taste and flavor that was more palatable to people

    So is just about - actually, make that all - vegetables and fruit we consume ... carrots weren't orange, potatoes were tiny and had to be frozen to remove the toxins before eating, wild strawberries are tiny and sour etc etc and endless

    Here's what fruits and vegetables looked like before we domesticated them

    The only product in original form would be native foods harvested in the wild

    I thought they were the kids that the great Peter Broccoli (the grocer) had out of wedlock. :rolleyes:

    I wonder if you would see people tasting the broccoli to see it's ok to buy like some customers do for the scoop and weigh section.

    Loads of other fresh foods have waste.
    • Mangoes + seed
    • Avocado + seed and skin
    • Pumpkin and its horrid centre and skin
    • Potato skin
    • Carrot ends
    • Corn and its stalk and wrapping
    • Bean ends
    • Lettuce (iceberg especially so)
    • Pea pods
    • Spring onion (half is waste)
    • Watermelon skin and that white stuff
    I just buy a bag of brocolli florets. Fresh...Or frozen. But brocolli stalk when it is cut into strips is OK in stir fry. Tastes just as **** as the rest.
    Imagine if people just wanted bread without crust ?.... Hell I just created a way for bakers delight to find a way of charging $9 for a loaf by taking the crust off.

    I agree to a point, but the difference is all of those are pretty logical whole units of produce. With the broccoli it is a very deliberate and transparent profit maximising effort at the consumers expense.

    I have no doubt there is a supervisor in some farm/processing facility telling the workers to leave the absolute maximum amount of stalk on there. The way things are going they'll be leaving the roots on as well soon!

    You need to come and live in Perth.
    Evidently we grow our own here as it's still reasonably priced. Everything is about $5/kg
    It's winter so I don't expect lettuce to be terribly cheap but it's still ok priced
    I use fresh or frozen broccoli/cauli. The frozen stuff isn't as pretty but it's fine for making mash, oven bakes, curry etc

    Pumpkin skin chips are the best ... slice off skin into chip lengths, toss in oil, lay flat on an oven tray and bake in the oven until crispy

    Seriously, I wouldn't buy broccoli if it was $16 per kg. Just eat what's in season then there's no reason to break off the stalk. Really there's no reason anyway, as I cook mine.

    Funnily enough was having a discussion with some friends about the stalks of broccoli. They were asking who eats it. Hubby replies with NO. My next words were, "yes you do". I cook it all the time, he eats it, but obviously has no idea what he's eating.

    When the kids were young, we had a Chinese student live with us. She used to slice the white part of the watermelon up and put in stir fries. It tasted OK.

    And potato skins (clean ones) can be deep fried for a snack.

    Pea pods are edible (say as a stir fry, curry or soup base, though they may be a bit fibrous) - but I haven't used peas in the pod for many years. Frozen peas are too convenient. I imagine that the pods coming from frozen peas are used for other products.

    If I'm roasting pumpkin I leave the skin on otherwise cut some up & put in freezer for stock along with carrot ends, bean ends, onion skin & pea pods( though usually have frozen peas), broc. stalks too.Lettuce (any kind) if getting old, I add to stir fries at the end. I cut off some white part of spring onion & plant it, then just cut it but leave roots in the ground to re-shoot. Gunna try the pickled broccoli stalks though, sounds good.
