Shows how low income Kiwis can have access to affordable housing through a shared ownership model, too.

Take ripe Avo out of fridge.
Take toasting sliced bread out of freezer and place in toaster, frozen setting.
Take your favourite avo knife and slice around the long ellipse. Carefully remove the seed and lick remaining flesh off the seed, glancing at your partner if present. Dispose of seed appropriately.
Reach for your best lemon and cut off appropriate sized piece, seal remaining lemon and refrigerate for cocktails later in the day.

When toast is ready, remove safely from toaster and place on your best stone plate. Scoop out enough avocado to lavishly cover each slice of toast. Using your best silverware, spread the avo on the toast so that it resembles a scene of luscious green and yellow countryside from the air.

Roughly squeeze a generous portion of lemon juice across your serve, and season with lashings of Himalayan salt and cracked pepper. Garnish with freshly-picked basil and parsley from your garden and consume on the balcony while selecting your day's open house viewings on domain.com.

Sorry but I wouldn't pollute my Avo with cheese, think of the calories.

Interesting, but I'm not sure what the smashed avo crowd can really learn here though. She saved $13000 (admirable yes) but she then bought using a low-deposit shared ownership affordability scheme run by the government. Without this, she almost certainly wouldn't have got a loan.

Here in Australia there is no such scheme and $13000 wouldn't buy a stake in a parking space in Sydney, let alone a house. Really that amount will only get you a mortgage in a country town (where job access is a problem) or a small apartment (for which oversupply and potentially falling value is an issue).

Also, governments giving mortgages to people on very low incomes is often really not a very bright idea as this group is at high risk of default - see Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The Benefits alone for that many kids will cover repayments.

I bought a block of untitled land for $7.5k (5%) deposit in Armstrong Creek. Good way to get in to the market IMO.

Yes but that would be $150k, not $580k. Lower loans come with a smaller risk.

I ate lot of smashed avo when I was a youngster, it was dirt cheap back then and I still do today.

Please don't go looking for excuses to blame the younger generation for voicing their concern about expensive housing.

Obviously, there are plenty of youngsters who still can manage and afford it and they made a lot of good decision and sacrificed and I salute them.

but the reality is, doesn't matter how you look at it, housing is a lot more expensive now compared to the previous generations.

When I was on 35K I can buy a decent house for 130K in reasonable close proximity to transport and facilities, can the current generation do the same? Yes I did have to sacrifice some stuff and holiday but it was an easier path with that smaller mortgage and payment.

I bought two avocados yesterday, $1 each. In order to supposedly put home ownership out of a young person's reach they'd have to be buying them by the truckload and mashing enough to fill a pool.

Lol. Generation smashed avocado don't buy them for 1$. They drive to a cafe. Pay for parking. Order for $18. The add a cappuccino for $5. Buy bottled sparking water for $9. It adds up ...
