People who have a hobby or interest will usually read or watch a lot about it, and will be well aware of the new improvements, bells and whistles available for a "modest" expenditure.

He averages in high single digits but retains his place in the team as being only one who can sledge properly!

I bought a house in a mining town, that was pretty silly.

M2 vs Epping road in peak hour? Both are rubbish, but depending on where you're going Epping road can be quicker.

My parents were extremely poor, but that was before I was born. My cheapness is definitely due to that fact, particularly as my grandmother had to raise three children (including one disabled) in post war Germany on her own. She was the most penny pinching person I ever knew, but it was all born out of necessity, if they wanted to eat.

That sounds a bit like my rugby career!
I was always a below average player, but always got a start, as I was very much the club's star player for the after-game boat races!

I looked up Coles just now and brushed potatoes are $1.50 per kilo if you buy 5 kilos - compared to a kilo of frozen chips for $2.

Cheaper at Aldi, I’m sure. However, you can see why people go for the unhealthy fried option - just 50 cents a kilo more expensive!

On the other hand, a few potatoes can be used to make cheap casseroles and soups that last a lot longer than a serving of chips - and can feed a family for several meals.

It’s about knowledge and knowing how to stretch a meal…

What one person considers silly another person considers a worthwhile expenditure.

Other than the absolute essentials such as basic food, shelter and clothing everything else could be considered as silly by one person or another. Anyone buying anything before ensuring they have covered the cost of the above essentials can be classified as silly. Other than that not sure we can judge what a person spends their hard earned on.

Not if it is booming and one took the money and ran. But of course not everyone escaped in time :(

A cricket bat could cost $1000? Thank god I avoided strenuous activity such as this.

How about silly things rich people spend their money on?

Thinking of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space race.

If a big bank offers an afterpay product and you can buy anything including electricity bills, council rates etc with it... I did say it's coming :)

But best to use the facility if you aren't poor (no cash flow issues) or else you can be hit with fees.

Its "receive first pay later" layby.
I think though, generally credit cards are still better for the disciplined due to reward points. Watch for surcharges on credit cards though. :)

Nicotine is a highly addictive legal drug that relieves stress. That's why ciggies are popular regardless the price. If they got too expensive and out of reach of the poor then crime rates will increase.

This is where the govt should step in with free stop smocking aids and drugs.

Also the govt should subside nutritious meals for the general population especially children in schools.

Racecars come to mind, I got it backwards though as you need to be well off to get in and usually not so well off to get out, ask me how I know.
