True, the heat loss is magnified with no insulation.

For a wall niche you might be talking about what, 0.4 sqm ?

Of a house with with a few thousand sqm of wall ceiling insulated area that is a very small area by comparison (it isn't just plaster either, but also has adhesive and a tile over it increasing the wall density).

Add in that most bathrooms have some form of constant ventilation (extraction fan or mesh vent in window) it probably explains why it is often already the coolest room in a house (even in warmer climates).

    Talking about cold rooms generally.

We just spent ten days in Tassie and the bathrooms were pretty cold, even in the nicely appointed four star places we stayed. We didn't expect it in the smaller places that were cheaper per night, but a highly respected chain of hotels... we thought it was a sure thing... but no.

Why wouldn't people install underfloor heating in a cold climate?

We put it into our Brisbane bathroom, and it just takes the chill off the floor. It isn't really "warm".

    Was it a newish building?

If so, it’s probably a combination of cost and Tassie people being a bit ‘tougher’ regarding cold!

Also better for the environment - was the hotel trying to get to carbon neutral?

Is your underfloor heating powered by electricity?

    Newish building, yes.

And yes, they are tougher than usual. We were in warm jackets, scarf and some people were in tee and thongs.

Sure, it's better for the environment. But the aircon was there. Central heating in the main (old) building. Solar? No idea of the hotel's stance on being carbon neutral. Though I'm sure if they had that attitude, we would have been able to separate out our recycle rubbish... alas no.

Our underfloor heating is power by electricity. All three square metres of it (no heating under the bath, shower or toilet base - just where we actually can feel it). :p

    And we have solar.

external wall is hebel. are we saying if niche is there, that side of whole wall can't have insulation?
what about putting a false wall to allow niche (like same as putting a half wall for ledge)? what might be the minimum thickness/depth will be needed
    thanks

No not saying that - was wondering if the section behind the niche would be missing insulation .

Many batts installers don’t install batts correctly (I.e. without gaps, cut around
pipes not compressed behind them etc). I’ve seen a few places under construction with large gaps - and once the internal lining is on the owner doesn’t know …

Make sure water can drain out to avoid mould etc. Put further away from shower head if possible.
Heating via towel rail? Requires power point.

We did a longer niche along the wall above the bath, on external wall (partially visible in photo) ... and 600x600 in the showers ... both inserted into wall cavities. I do like a ledge if you have the room, but on a narrow block, every mm counted
