hello, I am in the process of construction design and need to advise if i need shower niches. Not sure if they can be done against external wall? Also what's better niche or ledge? not sure about the cost.
for niche looking at min 1200mm length as shower is roughly 1800 mm long and that's external wall. thanks.

Well, somewhere to put the shampoo bottle is handy:) and you can catch your shoulder on those ledges.

get the height right tho. Mine will fit a pump shower gel but not a hand to pump it!

You don’t “need” them but I’d want one. Not 1200 long though (unless you do a shelf the whole length and not a niche - if you have the room for this).

You’ll have to arrange your nogging to get a decent width. Don’t skimp on width and allow room for six bottles of product if you can.

Doing this on an outside wall is fine.

Why not a vertical niche, with the bottom at the correct height for anyone wanting to shave their legs?

You’d want two niches though unless you want to place your foot amongst the shampoo bottles in order to shave your legs.

I wouldn’t want to bend down to reach the shampoo.

A friend had a small chrome tube installed in a corner to allow easy leg shaving.

    She’s a woman. ;)
We have a mamil friend. I’ve never asked him about his leg shaving habits.

I think anyone installing a shower should at least consider how it would be used by a woman. We did look at this but chose not to do anything special when we did our bathrooms.

    Great size
After having an over size shower for years I doubt I could go back to a 900x900 or 1x1 corner shower..........

Definitely put a niche in. I am spewing at Hubby who refused to do it in our showers.

We put in a tiled shower ledge that runs the entire wall of the double shower
    it is fantastic.
Can arrange as many bottles as you want, where you want. Height of bottles not a problem.
Handy place to put your glasses. It never looks crowded and it’s visually interesting
Niches can look really crowded when in use.

We are soon to built again and am definitely having a tiled shower ledge/ half wall

I put in ledges instead of niches in last 2 shower reno's because it was easier and takes up less room - just screw 2*35x70 treated pine pieces together and attach to wall, full width, wall-to-wall. I also put in ledges down low so they can be used to support feet

We did this (not our idea, but that of the designer) in the last job we did.

It's better all round than a niche for all the reasons you've mentioned.

Does putting a niche into the outside wall mean you can’t add insulation there (i.e. due to building into the wall space where the insulation would usually be)?

That alone would put me off a niche.

If the external wall is brick verneer there will be a cavity between the wall studs and brickwork that "could" have insulation stuffed in there.....
But for such a small area (that has tiles over wall substrate) it shouldn't make much of a difference thermally or acoustically.

Actually I read somewhere that the way heat loss works with insulation isn’t in proportion to the gap at all. So if there is a 5% gap, the heat lost through the gap is significantly more than 5%.

The Your Home guide has the details I think. (It’s been a while since I read this bit of info.) | YourHome
