Hi Guys, I am looking to install plantation shutters for my new home in Melbourne. Previously I installed Basswood shutters for the last property. This time around, our consultant recommended use using White Teak timber instead. Has anyone had any experience using this timber? I couldn't tell much of a difference just by looking at them.

Sorry I dont know the answer to your question.
Personally I like white, they brighten-up the room.
But wouldnt timber be too heavy? Would you consider PVC or some form or Aluminium?

I am just curious as to the chosen type of window coverings being Plantation Shutters.
Over the years, we contemplated a few times in a few of our properties, but each time we didnt proceed because they block out too much sunlight.

Why teak (endangered rainforest timber) and not some enviro-friendly timber or alternative especially if it is being painted?

As somebody who has them (white but maybe not teak though) in one of my rentals, I gotta say that they are not the best choice if you're renting the place out. Doesn't seem like this is your case, but I will say they are not the easiest thing in the world to fix. BUT... they look fantastic and in a beach pad, they really up the atmosphere and rentability of the place.

We have white (off white really) metal plantation shutters on many windows because they double as security.

They look like timber but meet Australian standards for security and look so much better than the steel bars on every window when we bought the house.

We rarely close our windows and angle the shutters to suit our needs.

White teak, according to the brochures, is supposedly plantation timber.

I am told they are not from the teak from rain forests and are FSC certified.

I hadn't heard of white teak. If the timber has a clear finish, then you can appreciate it's colour and grain however when painted, you can use virtually any material for the same effect.
