To be fair, most refugees I've met are generally pretty nice people who are happy to be in a safe county. Mental health issues play a part in their ability to move on and that should be addressed by the host nation. It is good to get people from countries with similar; laws, attitudes towards women, attitudes towards corruption, political ideologies etc. It does make it less clunky, but we can't choose who's country gets bombed and which people need to be cared for, so we just have to make it work I guess. I vote to take them.

    You've had the vaccine though.

It reminds me of the millennium bug.

We spent billions to upgrade IT systems for what, nothing? Nothing happened! Not a single plane fell from the sky! What a waste of money!

Malcolm Fraser offered many thousands of refugees visas in Australia, by boat and directly. Bob Hawke granted asylum to Chinese students who were in Australia at the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Australia is a better place as a result.

But perhaps we shouldn't take in refugees. More recently, we have an appalling record with those who've attempted to arrive by boat more recently. We don't deserve what these people have to offer.

I guess we should (selectively) but part of me wonders whether we'd be equally generous taking in Afghans etc? There def is some racial bias.

I think we should take some. Not sure how many though, and it would be good if they have skills in areas that we're short of.

During the last election I joked - refugees haven't been in the press for a LONG time, but now it's election time I bet we hear about boat people.

Literally the next Monday I was in Coles and saw an article about boat people splashed along the front page of the newspaper.

The risks are high as we are one of the forces that bombed their country
