I was about to say that. The interpretation of the city is just so different for so many people. The receptionist at one of my previous work places used to commute from Mittagong i.e. the Southern highlands.

You might be lucky. I'm going to be in Melbourne at the end of the month. ;-)

Wombeyan caves is nice, but I went there for a weekend and found it a bit too much driving for a weekend. Camping there is lovely. Especially when it's hot - the caves are nice and cool underground!

We had to go via Goulburn due to the suitability of our car (just a standard wagon) so it took longer. Would only want to go back Wombeyan caves or that area if I had a good 2-3 nights there

Yes, I went to uni there, but that was a looong time ago. My youngest daughter lives there, so this will be the second time down in six weeks.

I've never before bothered about uni or school reunions. But the old residential college will be disappearing soon, so this is a last hurrah. I'm actually rather apprehensive. I've had colleagues who are supreme court judges, professors, or doctors with Orders of Australia, so I feel like a real underachiever.

Deliberately spelt with a lower case "o" ;-)

Port Stephens , but maybe look at the north side , Hawkes Nest / Tea gardens . Quieter , though nice restaurants in the Boatshed / Tillermans . Best fish and Chips is Mumm’s . The single cone Norgen Vass ice creams are around three times the size of the one I bought in the Manly Corso .

You can drive up the coast going north from Hawkes nest and catch a ferry half way up the myall lakes to a camping / cabin resort called myall shores ( just check the ferry is still running before you do it , I haven heard it’s closed .

Catch the ferry over to Nelson Bay , or do the dolphin cruise

    Jenolan over wombeyan caves .

Kangaroo valley is nice . It’s nice to hire a canoe and paddle down from the bridge to a camp site an hour or so further down stream ( they pick you up ) So is Barrington tops is and there is ( was ) a nice farm stay you can stay in the way in, horse riding , walking .

Mudgee ( for the wine ) , but take a drive into Dunn’s swamp on the way in or out . Pretty little valley leading in and when we went in yellow wattle was in bloom and there was this beautiful orange ( dirt ) road curving through it ( don’t need four wheel drive )

We dropped into Kiama on our way back from Melb. intending to stop 1 night.
Ended up staying another 3 nights !
Loved it so much spend the next Christmas there for a week.
Stay in Kiama at the Harbour cabins, walk to everywhere in Kiama.
Then spend one day driving up to the highlands via Kangaroo Valley, waterfalls etc.
    The scenery is spectacular.

Went to Fitzroy Falls today... very pretty like the Blue Mountains. And Omg, another wild echidna sighting by me within two weeks.... 20171103_170856.jpg
And... I have to say, accommodation in the Southern Highlands is super pricey. I should think about setting up an airbnb here....

What about the Hunter Valley? Go for a hot air balloon ride - it's awesome! Also champagne brekky...:)

I loved banjos bush retreat near Vacy, stayed on top of a mountain with amazing views, and kangaroos just outside.

Gotta say... It was a great break in the Southern Highlands. Came back relaxed and secured a job paying 20% more the next day. Should do it more often...

And big thumbs up to the Fitzroy Inn in Mittagong. Beautiful place. :)
