no need to project your own issues onto others.

There is plenty of great content on here. Clickbait blog psots with no actual numbers or detail on strategy, not so much.

    Hi Jen D,
Whilst I realise your fellow reporters aren't tax specialists, wouldn't it be fair to say in your property reporting adventures that that you have come across those who are, given the nature of the subject you are reporting on?

Negative gearing seems to have such a high profile these days, and your story subject using the 6 year CGT exemption seems to indicate that there is a much larger set of rules available to the investor, and that a wealth of opportunities are available to all of the punters, who seem to continually feel that they might not be able to take advantage of the opportunities available to others...

SS and now Property Chat, provides a wealth of information in this regard, from the jungle of strata management (expertly commented on by participants such as @Russ ) to the small business adventures of @Bayview and @geoffw .(not to mention the unsurpassed suburban expertise of @datto in the architectural designs of both Holden Commodore rear lighting design, but also local demographic insights that leave all others wanting).

    I'm interested in:-

    1. Whether or not your good self has taken the plunge with an investment property (not prying, just curious);

    2. Your thoughts on Fairfax Media having a (rumoured) chat to @Simon Hampel in regards to taking a significant stake before a (rumoured) IPO of Domain :D ; and

    3. If negative gearing gets ring fenced (determined in 5 weeks or so) whether or not positive gearing should also be tax free at the same "fence" limit?

Too much depth for her. The article was glam trash pop entertainment news. Can't call her a serious commentator..

Great achievement. (Despite all the negativity surrounding it)!

Cmon Greyghost, let's give Jen Duke a chance.

I havent seen an article about whether Brad and Angelina have split because Jen (Aniston, for those who might be confused) have reconciled, or if Bec and Leyton are giving Nick Kyrgios etiquette lessons, or if <insert car manufacturer name here> Fashion Week included a new way of displaying some overpaid designers thought bubbles on what to wear.

Let's see how Jen D delivers on the next round of property chat (no pun intended...)

    I concur.

Jen Duke, what do you think?

And, you know what? Why not call up Linton, and Sarah F, and make it an ABC Four Corners joint venture?

I'm sure both Nathan Birch (interesting rags to riches story...) and @Kate Moloney (who has a very interesting story.. and a recently published book...) would have some valid material to contribute.

It is trash mag reporting... Sensationalising a story for entertainment purposes, appealing to the masses type reading.. It is not educational, factual and insightful material which benefits the novice or the experienced investor alike. That is the type of reporting we need more of. Hard numbers and hard facts, but people don't want to read that, they want to hear about fairytale investing stories.

As I said, good on the bloke involved for the journey.

    Hmmm.

I don't expect newspaper journalism to be hard hitting, especially on a subject piece (ie not reporting on an event) but I do want it to contain facts as accurate as possible.
I believe Jen met that requirement and the article gave enough information for people to think and then investigate further. No 1000 word article is going to give much in depth information.

Jeepers we love a scapegoat, don't we?
Anyway, good to see the young man in the article utilised his good fortune and ended up in Franga. A good buy in too. ;)

I think on the contrary, that most investors, especially those on PC are well aware of this 6 year tax exemption rule. A small sample taken at the water cooler may give you a different set of views but I would think most people who have 1 investment property and a competent accountant should know this.

Regardless, an informative article, to focus on the tax aspects and to catch the reader's attention with a buzz title '7 properties before 30'.

I do, however, feel that the article is giving the people who are against negative gearing/investors/landlords more excuses to vote out our tax benefits.

1 - we have two properties, one we converted into an IP and self-managed, but is now our home again. Our other is a lifestyle buy (10 hectare land block), but we intend to potentially subdivide and build on a portion to fund the build on the other half. I don't want a big portfolio myself, but have many relatives and friends who are huge on investing.

2 - No idea? Not really my side of the business nor anything I'd ever be involved in discussing.

3 - I don't have an opinion. I also don't think we're anywhere close to a rational debate from our pollies about negative gearing on either side of the fence. I haven't seen any decent modelling or discussions around the effects of changing current tax laws. That said, I'm not against changing them.

All good mate - was asleep when all this was happening. It's good people are interested, but some of this has just been plain rude. Not surprising, but given it's not a job requirement to be active on forums (and I've been floating around on the forums for years) it does make you hesitant.
