    Hi All,

Over the weekend I had a salesman from Roof Seal come and chat to me about my roof. Being an old house (1985), I felt the tiles were not in that bad condition (see attached), but the cement tiles have lost their glaze (if they ever had any?), which means they became pores and hold more water, adding weight to the structure...blah blah

Those cost of sealing these roof tiles are + $7,000 (which im not sure includes the capping) and not something I would consider paying someone to do, so I was just wondering if anyone has sealed their own roof? Is is fairly straight forward?

This isn’t urgent and will probably just go on my long “to do” list.

    Regards,
    Robbie

If they're not leaking, cross it off your "to do" list and forget about it. Once you start painting roof tiles there is no end to it.

    Tell 'em they are dreaming.

Neighbour recently had their tiled roof cleaned, re-pointed, sealed and painted at a total cost of $4,500 - extra because it was previously painted and had to be cleaned more thoroughly to remove the previous paint.

    Did you instigate the visit?

If you want to act, then at least get several quotes. Preferably from the person who will actually do the job and can provide references. Many of the big names use sub-contractors and may accept the cheapest, maximising their profit.

I'd suggest pointing and resetting of cappings only.

I'm about to start sealing and painting my cement roof tiles. Any tips?

I'm doing it all DIY, I've rebedded the ridges and replaces broken tiles, basically ready to repoint then clean and paint.

Oh yeh it always starts with a FREE roof appraisal .

they usually use scare tactics about the tiles absorbing so much water the roof trusses will collapse with the extra weight .
