Interesting news in the Courier Mail today
Four of the top Five in the rich list (Queensland) are in Property
Three of the top Five in the rich list (Aus) are in Property

Yes, from what I've see the rich lists are often dominated by those who have made their wealth through property, gives hope to us mere mortals!

Other ones you see are either old money, 2nd 3rd gen etc, which is not an option for me unfortunately!

To be in the top 100 you have to do what the top 0.00000384615% of all Australians do or don't do what the other 99.9999961538% of Australians do. That is take a lot of risk, work hard and not complain about NG, tax or how unfair/easy others have it.

    Either that or inherit it.

One of the stories that demonstrates the risk people take to get to the elite level was about a company that was founded in 2006 and today has a revenue of $1.6B US a year being Riot Gaming.

To give you an idea they started the company in 2006 and struggled to get finance for their gaming company because the game they wanted develop was going to be free to play and not a pay to win game. I can just imagine how funny it would sound to anyone listening to their business case we want to develop a game and not sell it and if people like the game we hope they will buy cosmetic items in the game.

Their game League of Legends was released in 2009 (3 year later) is 100% free to play and the only way they make money is by selling skins (costumes for the playable characters), these skins can be something like $2/3 to I think they have the most expensive at $20. There is no sponsorships with branding within the game although companies do sponsor their professional teams.

This leads me to another risk they took trying to start a thing called e-sports. Where they have their players play professionally in a world wide competition with each region having its own local competition. They broadcast these games with live audiences and even have match analysis and in game commentators (just like normal sports). If your team wins the world final last year you would win 1M US and again has been done without sponsors.

I wouldn't be able to handle all that risk but I wont make it to their level either.

Interesting to compare Australia vs America. In Australia 4/10 are property developers, the rest is probably miners with a few retailers thrown it. :)

In America mostly IT/technology companies are at the top.

All self-made rich people have a few things in common: determination, focus, hard work and most importantly timing/luck. I've seen some very determined and hard working people who never caught a break.

Such is life - while not giving up is useful, knowing when to cut losses is just as important.

That sounds like an extensive list Beano.

Did BRW use a smallish font so that this issue didn't need to be delivered with the aid of a pallet jack?

    disagree as a generality

opportunity is all around us all the time..............we are generally blind to it.

Im blessed to have some good connections which clearly show me its about making the break, not catching it per se.

On the other side, I have 100s of clients and friends that work HARD and havent made it to the other side ( of recurring income) yet.......those that persist with useable strategies will get there.

Love your positive view of things. When I said "rich people" I wasn't referring to people who worked hard to break out of the poverty cycle and can self fund their retirement for 25 years with change to spare. I am talking about proper rich people $25Mil+(arbitrary number) in net worth.

Let's hope their net worth is not calculated on the cap rate of the return on Greek bonds... could get awkward some time in the future.
