That's true. I love the US but they have nowhere near the privilages we have. I wouldn't swap places at all.

    Crude, but absolutely true.

Forget about the poorer 3rd world countries. Even the English/Irish are flocking here. To work and live.

Seems from that link that (ignoring UAE figures which show nearly everyone is from somewhere else?) Russia has the most (~12%), followed (percentage of total polulation) by France, Spain, UK, US and then Germany (all around ~7%), then a bit of a drop to Canada (~4.7%), Australia, Saudi Arabia (all around ~3%).

Edit: Assuming my maths holds up...

That depends on individual interpretation of comfortable versus modest...

IMO, modest is having enough for what you need (housing, clothing, food etc..) with little left over for luxuries or entertainment purposes.

Comfortable would be modest plus enough for some regular luxuries, entertainment and travel, including overseas 1-2 times a year. It also means having enough for periodic major purchases such as household appliances and vehicles.

From what I see here at PC, most seem to be aiming for a retirement level above what I would deem comfortable and could be considered as luxurious, which is supported by national median retirement incomes and related upper percentiles.

Your math is a bit wonky.... :p

For example, Australia has a population of ~25 M, so if 7.78 M are deemed immigrant population then that puts Australia around the 31% mark not 3%....

We have been retired for over 9 years now.

I would say we live a modest lifestyle although I must admit we have been increasing our level of modesty each year :D.

We are approaching the "day" and I - like many others - are worried about how "modest" does one have to be to live comfortably?

Are you able to share your net income and the cost of your personal expenses? Don't if you don't feel comfortable - and I'm not asking for a breakup of costs - although an indication of how much of this includes travel would be great.

We're looking at dropping off the work radar on around $80k/yr net
