I just bought a house that was originally designed for the owner who was disabled. I am thinking whether I should make changes to make it suit for non-disabled people. The other option is modifying it to meet the requirements of NDIS? Is it going to be very difficult? What is your thought? The house was built in the 80s.

I have attached some photos for your information.

    Thanks

I would keep the accessible features - change the colour scheme though, for a more modern look.

You might find that it appeals to a broader range of tenants.

You'd have to spend a lot of money, unless in an awesome location.

    As per your other thread.

    But to add,
This place hasn't been designed for a disabled person, it has been modified for likely an elderly person.

Based on the likely step down into the patio to access the laundry it will be EXPENSIVE to modify for NDIS as @RPI has already indicated.

Did you do any DD prior to buying, or was it just super cheap ?
Looking at multiple options trying to work out what to do "after" purchase isn't much of a plan !

You are cutting out a segment of the market by making the house less user-friendly.

    Renovate your thinking.

Does that depend on the level of support required? Aren't there different levels of design depending on the requirements of the tenant? Would something rather less than high physical support be an option?

Personally, I prefer the hobless shower/wetroom. Other than ramps/no steps & grabrails in the shower area, there doesn't appear to be any modifications ie lower counter heights, angled bathroom mirror, rails around toilet, wider doorways, two way swing doors, larger circulation spaces, lower GPOs sensor tapware, panic buttons etc.

    Hi Geoff

Sorry my brevity didn't get my point across.

People are spending a lot building awesome places. Even in non SDA space we are taking on new properties for them. Old stuff will need to be really well renovated just to get participants. Rent is set by NDIA so no pricing it out.

    To Be an SDA
    3 Resident IL - $247k+ spend
    3 Resident FA - $413k+

    Hi RPI,

I've just bought a 4 bedroom place (build in the early 90s) on the sunshine coast that has 3 young disabled women + 1 on-site carer living there and the contract runs until end of Jan-22 through an NDIS provider that focuses on homecare. What is the process for completing an assessment to see if we need to renovate? or determine if we would meet the requirements of the IL level?

    Kind Regards,
    Ali

    Totally agree!

Maybe the original post should be edited to delete outdated terminology.

However, that toilet/bathroom area is awkward.
Entry to the toilet is from the dining room?
Entry to the bathroom is through the toilet or from the main bedroom?

That part of the house needs redesigning.
