I've googled and googled (without finding something that actually works) to find out how to remove the auto population on my gmail account. There are so many people I'll never email again (via Gumtree for example).

There are answers, but they don't work now. The dropdown list of contacts (for example) just isn't there.

The latest answer I could find seemed to be simply that it cannot be done.

Does anybody have any clue (before I go crazy)?

    @wylie

Just had a fiddle wth my Hotmail.

Typed in one letter, I.e., “n” into the address line and a drop down box appeared with lots of options. A couple had a “!” beside them. When I clicked on the “!” It gave me the address with the option to “remove from recents”.

It seems that those with the “!” Were not in my contacts list. But you have to do them one at a time! (This will keep me busy for a while!)

Maybe google gmail plus “remove from recents” as that is what hotmail calls them.

    ?????

    Cheers
    Marg

    Just checked.

Google “remove from recents gmail” and you get heaps of suggestions.

    One should work.....

I share your frustration and sorry to,say haven't got an answer.
There are times someone advised me of a new email. An organised person I am, I would immediately update the Address Book. Unfortunately when I next compose an email to the person, the old email address MAY pop-up. Sometimes it does auto fill the correct new address. Drives me insane.
I've cleared cache, cleaned up,Address Book.... will have a look more and report later.

Thanks Terry. I've looked on various occasions but none of my searches (until today after I'd posted) told me to look in that little group of nine boxes. I had looked there, but not clicked on the "more" button. Hooray!!! Problem solved.

I've just deleted not wanted contacts in A and B. I'll work though a few letters each day. There are hundreds of old contacts that I'll never need again, many from Gumtree and eBay.

It's too late now. But the right answer depends on which version of Gmail - android, iPhone, iPad, desktop; standalone application or browser based. There's slight differences between them all.
