    My goju-ryu is full contact kumite (except kicks/closed fists to the head)

    @TMNT I think most important is a good school, go and do some try out classes. As a stress relief and lifestyle change, it has everything for me: sensai/shihan telling me to exercise (and you do it!), comraderie, a physical outlet, some tradition, functional strength, philosophy, and tangible interim goals (each grading). It's great. There are surely some good dojos in Melbourne. GO try it out!

    Edit: here's a short clip of my sensei/shihan (master) doing a light contact spar. Try thinking of other things doing this :)

    @TMNT I've been there... really.

    What didn't work (for me):
    1. Holiday - was only temporary relief
    2. Another lifestyle distraction - still have to return to root cause of problems
    3. Willing myself towards a better place - cause of toxicity still remained

    What did work:
    1. A large break - months not days/weeks
    2. Change of career path / employer
    3. A country lifestyle property - this one is incredibly effective for me

    My 1st step was a decent break. 2 months in my case. Then I realised I needed more than a break.... I needed a change in direction. The rest is history & close friends noticed a very positive change.

    Enjoy the journey
