    Hi all,

We are currently working on some plan for our renovations and want to make room for a nice size double garage. For all the proportions to work, we end up with 6.3mts (length) * 5.1mts (width) at it narrowest (5.3mts at it widest point), which seems a little tight for 2 medium sized cars.

What you guys think and would you recommend as a good size for a double garage?

    Regards,

Depends if u need to park an A1 or an A8 :)

Need to be mindful of the property location, as in town most peops idea of medium is an I30 or Corolla, whereas in the burbs its more like a Camry

There is an australian standards for parking

6.3 is great but 5.3 or 5.1 isn't going to work. Car bays with no walls can be 2.5m wide as the doors can swing outside the 2.5m - ie shopping centre car park/carport. But for a garage you need room to open doors and walls so the minimum (and it's still quite squeezy) is 5.4 internally (not including walls).

I would recommend if they are medium size cars or you have kids that you go wider and if possible go for 6m width.

Thanks guys. Agree, with your comments and was thinking 5.5mts minimum. Challenge is not to affect overall form of the external design.

Even the 6.3mtr length wont give you much room in front or behind if you have a Camry type vehicle.
I like my double garage to be 7mtr long and 6mtrs wide if not 6.5mtrs, that way I can keep the bikes and storage away from the cars.

Unfortunately I only have a wide single garage at our current place 6.9mtrs long and 4.8mtrs wide.

    Min 6 x 6 Is ideal
A lot of project home builders go 5.5 wide x 5.8 deep.
Seems to accomodate a larger and smaller car ok.
I reckon maybe half of homes use the garage mainly for storage, in any case.

I added 1m to make the garage 6.5 wide. Very very useful. I walk down the street and see all these garages with 1 car and the other car parked on the street. I can park both cars in my garage and have room for shelving on either side.

We gotta 8 x 12 garage. It's nice opening a door fully and not having to worry

... until you get a F458 and realise you need the full double garage to open the door (the door is stupid long, and the sill is huge as I discovered trying to get out of my mate's car....) :D Maybe should be in the first world problem thread....

    Council's are idiots

They bang on about off street parking space requirements when you try to build or develop, but NOTHING for storage

Next time you are driving around on a weekend, people there with their double garage door open lucky to fit even one car in for all of the stuff stored where they are supposed to park "off street" o_O

Don't even mention apartments and parking

If you have the room to go larger spend the few extra dollars

I hate the tin sheds they allow in vic as storage to meet requirements. Tacky horrible things and completely useless to actually use. We made our garage an extra 700mm each side to fix dexian style racks. A few other size tweaks and we fit 2 cars, a squat rack for a gym, and 12 lineal metres of quality storage.

I’d go at least 6 x 6. Even then you won’t be able to fit much in besides two cars. Ours is 8 x 8 and perfect with plenty of rooms for bikes, tools, etc.

Or get 2 cars with batwing doors aka a deLorean but ceiling heights need some consideration.

A lot of people dont bother to check the measurements of their garage and are horrified after moving in to find they cant fully open the car door and have to squeeze out. Happened to a disabled friend who bought a villa and found her car [a suzuki] was just able to squeeze into the garage and she was not able to fully open the car door making her life very difficult ... :(

Similar story was told by the company director years ago. He bought a new car but it wouldn't get up the steep & narrow driveway - Rolls Royce accepted the car back.

I would also say 6x6 seems standard with a reasonable builder... Obviously the bigger the better if you are accomodating for some extra storage such as bikes, tools, lawn mower etc...

In my ip I have a 6 x 6 shed with a garden shed behind it. All tools in the garden shed and cars in the garage. But never put cars in there.

I keep saying I need a bigger shed. With 2 growing boys who love cars I'd love a double story garage
