This is a good piece of information, however the issue I have is with the term "normally". The studies on safe withdrawal rate show that 4% works "almost" all the time. Therefore 5% has failure periods that people need to be aware of. Generally the worst case scenario is a crash the day after retirement and everyone should have a plan if this happens.

Oops I posted one of my fav quotes of his but not the questions.

    1. Has he finally taken his own advice and become the new Rene?

    2. Why would an investor buy an ETF/LIC that has performance below the index or it's own index?

    3. Has he been still advocating industrials? And does he any methods to beat the chart below? Or is it keep buying and wait.

How do I like this about 5 times over. It would be great to case study some LICs/stocks/ETFs that people are thinking about and analyse/discuss pros/cons/considerations. @austing 's beginners guide is a great start. There are a few investments talked about here that I scratch my head about.

Stock analysis, what's that:confused:? The dartboard approach is about all I could manage nowadays:).

Thornhill's approach is straight forward when it comes to LICs selection. It's old school LICs and it has been done to death in this thread.
One can try and add some satellites to the core approach but the benefits are likely to be marginal at best. This is already moving away from Thornhill's approach in a way.

I don't mind PTs old school LICs as a base, but reading these threads, it is only a base and there's so much more out there that can really boost this base as long as one understands why to choose 'x' (which is the basis for my question). This is where the points in @austing's guide comes in to build the understanding.

Will help with the dart-board analysis too. More brew leads less confirmation bias in the results! :p

True wisdom right there, PT's offering is excellent, however he is certainly not the only widely respected and robust thinker in strategy and markets and yes I agree there IS a LOT more out there that can boost his excellent premise.

Point of clarification.. post not clear? or an example of the ' so much more that can boost the base'?

The post was a reflection on the discussion across the various PC threads about the many LICs and ETFs which wouldn't fit into PTs base criteria, but, from the discussions, appear to be showing solid foundations for long term returns.

Yep, the latter. All this is far better discussed over a Rasberry Saisson though i dare say.
