Is this the only rigmarole way to get there?

    Sorry, yes.
    Big mountains in the way.....
No short cuts unless you fly!
If you really want to drive to Milford, a night in Te Anau may be a good idea.

Seems hard to find Vegan or vegetarian restaurants in Queenstown on line. Anyone know of any that exist? So no meat products, pure vegan or at the very least just vegetarian.

    Thanks

I went there with my parents who are vegetarians and we had no issues finding vegetarian food. Plenty of Indian restaurants most of which have an extensive vegetarian menu. We ate at cafes most mornings and they had plenty of vegetarian options too.

Alternatively, there is a pretty big supermarket right in the heart of the town. Buy some fresh produce there and if you book a service apartment, you could very quickly whip something up.

Cheers mate, I had a feeling there would be more than what the on line search was showing and from what you said it should be fine. The supermarket will be a good back up. Having a kosher diet can be tricky sometimes when travelling. Thanks

Not long to go now for this trip...we can't wait to get the hell outta Sydney for a break. Love Sydney but you just know when its time to get out, recharge then jump back in the ring. Three weeks and counting...

Looking forward to this being me soon....:D

I recently got back from my NZ trip. Landed in Christchuch then hired a motorhome and did the drive south stopping at Lake Tekapo, Wanaka, Milford Sound and ending in Queenstown. You'll love it, such a beautiful country.

Wanaka - Go see the blue pools at Haast pass

Milford Sound - definitely do the cruise, we did the Southern discovery

    Queenstown
    - Onsen hot pool is a must, as is the Shotover jetboating. The jetboat actually runs along the river down below the pools but there's no chance of catching a glimpse so all good to enjoy in your birthday suit.
    - Eat at Fergburger
    - Do the gondola ride and get a 5 pass to ride the luge, its awesome.

There's plenty of other things to do and see but these were just some of the highlights.

Thanks for all the tips! I will have to try to get that cruise in then at Milford Sound. :) Also Onset hot pool sounds enticing... could do with a lot more Birthday suit action :D

No worries mate, just make sure you book the Onsen hot pools in advance as they book out pretty quickly, there's only 6 hot pools.

We did the aquarium tour as part of the Milford Sound cruise, it was only marginally more expensive but pretty cool.

Unfortunately the birthday suit action was frowned upon when I did the jetboating

Make sure you take plenty of insect repellent to Milford.
