I live in NSW, however. would welcome such a law, I live next door to a house that has been abandoned for over 12 months and neglected for about 6 years with the results obvious to anyone who walks past.
There is nothing I or the neighbour on the other side can do except watch the grass grow and the obvious deterioration of the property.

Councils will issue warnings, then a fine, then send a bill for the clean up and send someone to do it.
Your council is enjoying the paid covid 5 yr holiday.

    Cant see this working.

    How do they define “abandoned”?

Presumably someone is paying the rates - if not, council already has the power to seize the property and sell it to recoup unpaid rates.

    Very true ;)

I would like to assume that some properties are in testate or already subject to state trustees proceedings, a large number could be empty due to development design and applications taking years to get to approval stage also.

I have a friend who has two IP's held for 8+ years with neither rented ever, both are a capital gain play, I don't blame him either after having been to VCAT previously

Property is for some a gearing investment/somewhere to park funds, there's no legislation (yet) to say it also has to be rented out :p

”Queensland’s largest water provider Urban Utilities on Saturday revealed 19,500 homes across lower south east Queensland had used barely any water for months — suggesting long term vacancies."

That's a lot of grow houses.

Yeah they said these numbers include people who have provided their homes to others rent free. So not necessarily vacant, the owner is simply not making money off them.

The reason they gave is to encourage more rental properties to be made available.
But I say it could have been done as a reward system, not penalty. Eg if someone converts their AirBnB to rental, give them 6-months free rates! :p

Joke aside, it is quite astonishing to know that they are that many vacant houses around us. Our neighbour of PPOR has been vacant even since we moved here 18-years ago, although they do drop-by from time to time.
Our own IP has been vacant since after Covid maybe 2-years now. We just like the peace and quiet when we go down for weekends, and not have to worry about dealing with annoying Tenants......

Considering what one gets for an AirBNB (without the hassle) compared to a full time rental - $1-2,000 rates reward probably ain't going to cut it

The ongoing reach and expectations of Govco (councils all the way up to federal) in their attempts to garnish from those that go without and work hard to "get ahead" in life all to benefit the majority (largely those that expect an easy ride) is driving many of investors away from property rentals :p

Or full water tanks because of all the rain. Why use town water when you have rainwater. Zizi
