A friend of mine in Logan did his own house lift. Brand new reslabbing, electrical work, plumbing, the works. He's completely self taught, zero council approval, but I as someone who has spent most of my childhood on construction sites (dad was a builder) I can see he's done a reasonably good job.

Question is - does council approval need to be sought at intervals throughout construction or can it be done retrospectively?

He still insists that he doesn't want approval (has a thing against the govt, one of those guys that buys into conspiracy theories and stuff). But even if he did want approval I wonder whether it's too late?

It might pay to speak with a private certifier who may be able to advise what's possible.

Did he get any plans done for the work?

Is it compliant? eg setbacks, overshadowing, privacy & BCA?

I imagine it's mostly complaint. But no plans etc.

A wee bit difficult to show compliance when you can't demonstrate what's been built without destructive investigation.

He's anti government. Doesn't like regulation etc. sigh. So I assume checks need to be done at intervals during construction?

The issue will be if he ever comes to sell it, no one will pay the asking price as they will have to factor in the cost of demolition.

First question is - is the downstairs is legal head height?

If they know what they built they could get it drawn. But isn't it likely council will want to have critical components examined eg column beam connection behind gyprock

Council want their $donation for your hard work. .... or "your friends" ;) hard work

Private certifier more likely to avoid to rubber gloves being used. Council can struggle with thinking and with the power they bestow they'll just get the owner to pull stuff apart at their own cost
