    17. Posts per day - top 50% of posters vs the rest (28 day moving averages)

Refer to this post from our 4 year anniversary stats for more discussion about what this chart means.

The gap between newer members and more established members has grown in 2021, with newer members posting up to 10% more per day than established members.

This is clearly a sign of a more diverse community with more people posting, driven by excitement about the current property boom.

    18. Posts per day - Property vs Shares (28 day moving averages)

    upload_2021-6-18_12-33-1.png

You can see the surge in share discussions during 2020 - or more specifically a drop in the percentage of total posts which were property related, due to all of the uncertainty about the property market.

Note the strong growth in living room discussions as a percentage during 2020 - mostly due to COVID discussions.

Property related discussions are back at the highest level they've ever been - unsurprising given the strength of the property market right now.

    19. Posts per day - popular topics (90 day moving averages)

    upload_2021-6-18_12-53-28.png

You can see the increasing interest in the property market - where to buy discussions increased throughout the second half of 2020 and then oce the new year hit, there was a huge surge in economics discussion to try and sort out what the market was actually doing.

Finance discussions have been remarkably steady throughout the last 18 months.

What are you saying? The discussion post increase is an indicator to a housing boom? :D:p

Nah, quite the opposite - a decrease in the interest in CFDs, equities and horse racing.

    20. Posts per day - COVID (90 day moving averages)

This chart simply counts the number of posts each day which mention the word "COVID" and does not necessarily represent the volume of overall discussion on the topic, since that keyword would not be present in every post.

    upload_2021-6-18_13-47-24.png

    • The first mention of the word "carona virus" was on 28th Jan 2020
    • The first mention of "COVID" was on 13th Feb 2020

Interesting seeing the spike in new users this year

For me that's confirmation of an ongoing boom ( in selected places ...)

@Simon Hampel . Curious , who has the record for being banned the most times .... Have there been tried hard aspiring commercial people / spammers ?

There have been a couple of people who created new accounts after being banned - some of them continued to cause problems and so were banned a second time.

It is against my policy to discuss banned users specifically - but there was a user from the "bay" area of Melbourne who was banned quite a few times under different accounts for breaking the rules.

There was also a user from Sydney who was constantly posting negative news about the property market - turned out he was working for an investment bank that was attempting to build products that could short the property market and so was keen to see a significant drop in property values. That wouldn't be working out too well for them right now! I've probably banned about 20 or more of their accounts over the years. This user has probably been the worst offender.

We don't get much in the way of spammers / commercial posts that cause ongoing problems - most users get the message pretty quickly once they receive warnings or a ban.

We have had consistent problems recently with automated spam registrations coming from an Adelaide based SEO company (almost all of the businesses being promoted are from Adelaide), but my system catches 99% of these user registrations and holds them for manual approval and they get spam-banned before they can ever post. I'm probably averaging one user account banning per day from this automated system

    21. Posts per day - sentiment keywords (90 day moving averages)

    Posts containing "positive" keywords:
    • boom
    • bubble
    • bull
... vs posts containing "negative" keywords:
    • bust
    • crash
    • downturn
    • correction
    • bear
Shown as a percentage of all posts.

    upload_2021-6-18_16-24-50.png

Sentiment turned negative for a few months early in COVID, but since the middle of last year, sentiment has turned strongly positive again with the highest postive sentiment we've seen since the site launched!

    24a. User status

    upload_2021-6-18_17-19-20.png

    • Valid: account is fully active and the user can post (this number is shown as the "total users" count you see in the sidebar)
    • Invalid: account is suspended because the user either has not confirmed their email address; emails sent to them have bounced back as undeliverable; the user requested that their account be disabled; or they changed their email address but never verified it
    • Banned: account has been disabled because the user was either banned for spamming, or banned for rule violations. Note the percentage doesn't show on the pie chart - it is 1.5% of total user registrations.
    • Removed: accounts have been purged from the database because they were either invalid or banned and never posted. Purges happen only periodically, so over time more of the invalid and banned (because of spam) users will be removed.

    24b. Valid users

    upload_2021-6-18_17-19-49.png

    • Active: valid and has posted
    • Never posted: can post, but hasn't

    24c. Invalid users

    upload_2021-6-18_17-20-27.png

    • Email bounced: we received notification from our email service provider that mail was permanently undeliverable to this user (ie was never a valid email address; email address is no longer valid; user has blocked us; user made a spam complaint against us; our email service provider blocks us from sending to that address)
    • Incomplete Registration: user never confirmed their email address after registering
    • Account Disabled: user voluntarily requested us to disable their account
    • Never logged in: user has never logged in again since registering and never completed registration
    • Email Changed: user changed their email address but did not confirm the new address
