    33. Most popular themes (other than the default, which is used by nearly 98% of users)

    upload_2019-1-29_11-48-48.png

Note that "Blue Theme" is actually the default theme - the users showing up in this chart using that theme have explicitly selected it (most likely after trying other themes) rather than the majority of users who have not chosen a theme at all (and thus get Blue Theme by default).

I know there is a Notable Members list on PC but it is based on number of posts by the members. For me, it is NOT a measure of member value as some posters make short/meaningless posts such as Welcome, Yes, No, Please Explain, ... I assume their sole purpose is to get/keep their post count up .

To me, a better measure of member value would be average Likes per Post. I realise a poster can get their family/friends/associates to like all of their posts but would anyone entertain this long-term?

For example, as I write this, @Nodrog has made 6,314 posts and received 15,302 Likes. That is a whopping average of 2.4 Likes for every single posts.

I believe forums like PC grow and prosper, not on the quantity of posts, but on the quality/value of those posts.

I feel we should acknowledge those who make this site so valuable, so worthy, ...

If this is too hard or against PC policies, that is OK.

    A couple of declarations:

    1. I do not know @Nodrog, never met them, etc but I do read most/all of their posts and I have learnt a lot from them (keeps me coming back) and I am a better investor because of them.

    2. One of my reasons for joining SS/PC was to continue increasing my knowledge. Another was to share my own knowledge and experience. Hence, some of my posts can become rather lengthy. I must confess that I do monitor my “average likes per posts” :D to see whether I am delivering value to the PC community. I am currently on 1.8 and trying hard to get it to 2.0

"Like ramping" has been a thing. And sometimes two users will give a like to almost every post from the other one.

Most likes given to my own posts have been for something funny or something in the politics forum (generally the same group of members who have similar beliefs). While I am nowhere near your ratio (probably below 1) I don't think that any credence should be given to me in the more serious forums to which I don't contribute much any more based on something funny I said elsewhere.

Someone like @Terry_w who has many very valuable posts has a rather low like ratio.

Yup - see here for previous versions of these stats (will get to them for 2018 shortly): PropertyChat is 3 years old!

Note that the best way to get a high posts-to-likes ratio is to post good posts infrequently. As such, I'm moving more towards a weighted measure which compensates somewhat for the skew towards people who post less frequently. Posting frequently while maintaining a high likes-to-post ratio is a lot more impressive!

See here for the most recent weighted likes ratio stats from June 2018: PropertyChat is 3 years old!

FWIW, I don't think likes-to-posts ratio is a good measure of anything other than "people liked their posts a lot". As @geoffw mentioned - people active in some off topic forums can generate a lot of likes on posts completely unrelated to investing.

People give likes for many different reasons - it can be dangerous to presume that it indicates anything more than "someone liked it".

Because the likes-to-posts ratio is heavily skewed by people who post relatively infrequently, we're now using a "weighted like rate" measure to compensate - people who post a lot but still get a lot of likes will get a higher like rate.

The like rate is calculated using the formula: likes * LN(posts) / posts, which effectively gives greater weight to users who have made more posts and minimises the impact of infrequent posters who drop clangers and thus get a disproportionately high amount of likes.

Unfortunately the database software I use doesn't have a native function for counting words, so getting an accurate count would require a lot of additional programming.

Instead, I'm going to count characters (which includes letters, punctuation and spaces and so on), and divide this figure by 6 to get an approximation of the number of words posted (based on the assumption that the average number of letters per word in the English language is somewhere between 5 and 6, and adding an extra for spaces). It's a crude measure - but should give us a rough idea.

So - let's start with a total count:

    46. Users who posted the most words in 2018 (approximated by dividing number of characters written by 6)

Note that I'm not really happy with the accuracy of this - I think I'm going to have to come up with a more sophisticated way of measuring it.
