After they moved to Australia at age 15 and later got graduate jobs, they decided they wanted to get on the property ladder themselves:

'We started putting away 20-30 per cent of our salaries at PwC and Macquarie Group [where we worked] each month,' Sana said.

'We also stopped travelling - which we love - and didn't go out partying and spending lots of money.'

    The reward is surely sweet.

Thanks for the post & the responses. In 2012, we did a Somersoft interview and we just read through it - wow, been a while. Finding Somersoft changed our life. Not only because of what we learnt about property but also because we have gained some great friends here.

Would like to add a few more things.

    Additional Thoughts & Key Lessons

    Personal Challenges & Shifts

Often this isn’t discussed however everybody goes through personal challenges of different sorts. For us one of the key challenges growing up was belief. We didn’t know we could build a good life. It has been a lot of work to shift from a ‘victim’ mindset to taking ‘responsibility’ to change our life. There has been a lot of reading that has happened and journals written to challenge limiting beliefs about life & success. So, it has been a lot of pro-active action to shift beliefs and perceptions to move forward.

We had less than $100 to buy our first semester university books and we had been in this country for 3 years at the time. Not a great feeling =).

When we started buying, we didn’t know Sydney will grow. We just knew that we had to continue buying whenever we could, if we are to build solid financial foundations in this country (where many of our peers were either born here and had comfortable family homes). The driver for buying cheaper properties was firstly affordability and secondly because we had no family money or comfort for that matter, to eventually be in a home for ourselves and our family.

It’s important to find a solution, whether it’s for looking for an opportunity for work, home buying or investing.

    3 Key Lessons

    1. Structure finance right from the start. Hard to admit, but we did learn a few lessons around structuring during our journey. Cost us may be $2mill in borrowing. Ouch. Hence the decision to go in the direction we have – to assist others do it right with a big picture focus

    2. Fixing rates – listened to someone who was roughly twice our age and a different risk profile. We fixed a bunch of rates. Cost a bit when the fixed rates were mid 7’s! This impacts valuation shopping and moving lenders if need be!

    3. As always buy well located properties - that are already re-zoned or have the location to be picked up in the re-zoning. Gives you more options, especially in the current climate.

For us the ‘Twin Support’ is priceless.

We’d like to thank our mentor @Rolf Latham for being the influence Rolf is in our life. This has helped us in changing our life. We didn’t know what we were missing out on till we met Rolf. Apart from learning the technical side of things, it’s been enormous to learn about serving others, making a difference so it can help others improve their lives and long term goals. In addition to this, it's great to learn to dream big and aiming high. It’s satisfying.

Lastly, 'When your 'why' is big enough, the 'how' is easy' - Jim Rohn

Congrats Mona and Sana. You both deserved this. All the best with your portfolio and business given the currrent lending climate.
