I'm surprised there hasn't been a response to this thread since the results seem exceptional from a financial / sole trader business standpoint.

Especially when it's a very simple business - with no direct customers, stock, appointments or deliveries. Overheads are negligible. A few acres in tropical FNQ (that he owns) would not be super expensive so the yields (based on land value even after taking out a salary) may well be 100%.

Let's take his YouTube income. Socialblade has a clue primitivetechnology YouTube Stats, Channel Statistics - Socialblade.com

It's a big range ($53 - 850k pa) but my experience is that somewhere in the geometrical midpoint is about right - ie about $200 - 250k pa.

Then there's Patreon. >$6000 per video. Primitive Technology is creating Video | Patreon

So all up $250-300k assuming 1 video/month. That's the same that a senior bureaucrat gets (who would have way more stress and higher personal spending than a former lawnmowing contractor).

This is another Australian YouTuber. Also successful. Also producing material of worldwide appeal but more specialised. EEVblog But he needs other spin off things for a high income (which he does).

A difference between the two is that Primitive Technology has exceptionally high view numbers per video (millions). Every one is consistently highly viewed. There only needs to be one video per month to get high ratings. Time spent is divided between being in the bush building, researching techniques and video editing/production. Whereas most other successful YouTubers have much lower views per video (10s or 100s of thousands) but need to come up with a video every couple of days which is pretty much full time.

There would be some risks - eg dependence on YouTube and Patreon. But he has a brand that is probably well known so it could be applied to other platforms. Putting the considerable surplus generated into good quality assets would complete the cycle. It might look primitive but the business approach and success look first rate modern.

The bad news is that it's a great niche for him but may not be scalable - ie it might not work as a franchise. And others have tried to copy and have not got the view ratings he has.

But there's likely other niches out there!
