That's good I think. Lots of people do the right thing, but those who try to scam the system ruin it for the rest.

    Your title is misleading

He did not ban four hundred and sixty seven visas.
He banned a program called "457 visa program", which allows skilled immigrants to come in and boost the economy.

Also (re second comment who clearly never even opened the link) - it has nothing to do with people trying to scam the system.

I think it does ... truck drivers from India working for less hourly rate for a start !!!
Truck motors had to be cleaned weekly because of them not stopping for toilet breaks !
    I'm glad it's banned because I saw exploitation !

Other examples are using people on visas for cleaning jobs at low rates think like $6 an hour !!

Terrible terrible exploitation usually by foreign bosses to their own .
Using Cambodians to remove asbestos up at the AMP building .

This thread has 2 replies and neither of them even read the link.
It is about skilled migrants, not about cleaners and other unskilled people being exploited, and not about anyone scamming the system.

Edit: did not realise that picking fruit and working in a hotel is considered "skilled labour". my mistake.

Can't believe 'Wool buyer' was removed. That's definitely a specialist job, I wouldn't know were to start if I ever wanted to purchase it. Seriously though, people that wrote the list were probably ******* themselves laughing thinking who would question a wool buyer.

I know student visas are often used too.

And many when here, organise weddings that are, well, flakier than the MAFs

@Anthony Brew , not sure what you're on about to be honest. The title of the thread is the title of the article!
Where did you get that 467 from?!!

There is widespread scamming of the skilled labour 457 visas. The labour market testing is almost always avoided (or advertised at a rate significantly below market) and employers then bring in offshore labour at minimal pay rates just above statutory minimums.

The 457 program being replaced with a shorter one that doesnt offer a road to permenant residency isnt too bad. My industry (digital marketing) relies heavily on tech talent from the UK - most are happy to be paid to work in a city and live in city thats not cold and drizzling all the time.

Also should apply pressure for companies to bump salaries to local citizens already working in the field given the path to residency will be cut

Call me cynic, but newish govt = new skilled short term visa system with new name = pretty much what the old one did

457s had a good place for short term requirements where a local wouldn't go for the job as they wanted a permanent position. If you were running a project that needed someone for 6/12/18mths it was hard to hire a local because they wanted permanent roles not contract roles even if that contract paid 20% more.

The new scheme sounds similar but a bit improved.

The only 457s I came into contact with (and managed) were genuine not rorts. I could get a geologist from overseas to audit geological data via 457s for 3-9mths when there was a shortage of geos in Perth and no local wanted contract work like that.

The other change in the 457 replacement is that it'll tighten up the English language skills requirement. This will make it harder to ship in staff from lower wage countries.

There's also talk of cutting down the numbers of immigrants on the permanent residence pathway. This might have a larger impact. Could it be the end of a Big Australia by stealth?

I think that Turnbull is reacting to the threat from One Nation, and noting that opposition to immigration has grown in Australia, as well as being one of the major drivers of Brexit, possibly Trump, and some of the populists in Europe such as Wilders and Le Pen.

yes this was not totally unexpected though. It seems last month there was already talk about not allowing businesses like fast food joints / coffes shops from hiring via 457 visa program to make more positions for local young aussies. Looks like MT has taken it one step further.

Dont think he has a choice, libs have already lost WA recently and not much power in the senate now, so its either get with the populists/protectionists program or lose the next election in a big way.

This policy might stoke inflation in a bad way though as businesses might have to pass on the higher wage costs to consumers. We might see a spike in the price of burgers and coffees!

From today's news it seems there will be still skilled migrant visas allowed, but just under a different name (with supposedly stricter criteria).

This is just a publicity stunt!
