I would have thought it's not the size, rather the quality of it. :)

That could be taken a number of ways. I mean, could it be considered better quality if you bling-ed it up. Or worse if it was scarred?

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind having some sort of quick visual way to determine a forum member's street cred, so to speak :)

How does one determine street cred?! LOL
And especially given there's so few of us on here who use our real names

Bring the green squares back only to stop people from spamming posts to build up their credibility!

Why do you think a person who doesn't have anything to sell need to publish their names?

    LOL.

Most of my green dots weren't because I knew anything; they were because I said something funny, or something interesting to that person who kudosed me, or a "thanks mate" for coming in to someone's defense in an argument with a troll or other..

Not much of a recommendation I felt....especially if you looked at my line of dots!!

Lots of dots - no susbstance, lots of BS and fluff. :)

    All hat; no cattle. :)

I'm not really a fan of "reputation" type systems like we had on Somersoft. We have likes here, which are almost as useless really, but easier to use.

This is a good question about how to judge the credibility of a poster though (at least in the eyes of the remainder of the community) ... I think a more sophisticated mechanism is required than a simple reputation or likes system.

    Possible way:
Identify 'positive' words. Check the poster who is been quoted. It can't pick up sarcastic comments.

I do understand the concern a little though, I kinda feel like a noob all over again. On Somersoft I had over 10 years membership, over 4,000 posts and all those funny little green boxes. Here I have the privelege of this being my first contribution to a whole new forum. Reputation is a funny thing and I'm too old to try and rebuild from scratch...

    Cheers,
    Michael

*edit* There you go, I even get the privelege of being deemed a New Member after over 10 years on Somersoft. If this is the new home, then that seems a bit incongruent *endedit*

Unfortunately, although I did ask for permission to migrate user data across from Somersoft - that request was denied, so we are all forced to start from scratch here.

At least everyone is in the same position.

I haven't had a chance to look into the titles that appear under a user's name next to their posts ... I'll add it to my todo list.
