We bought our affordable dream home last year - and we LOVE it. We weren't in the market at all, but just sort of fell in to this, and we couldn't be happier. And it was affordable - we paid $670k and it's pretty much beachfront. I can see the ocean from my office window. :)

We've spent a bit renovating the kitchen and installing a wood heater which make us love it even more. This is our forever home for sure.

They dont come up for sale very often. Id estimate $2.5 -$3mil maybe more.

Edit... that one sold for $2.45 mil in 2013. Worth a bit more now.

Been living in the "dream home" that we could barely afford at the time for over a decade now..... and it has left me somewhat unsure of what I really want (is it a "what I need" thing?)

I've also had the very good fortune to spend some time in houses (I can't afford) through family connections - for example a 3 story beach front house on the Gold Coast, and a massively monumental just built house (all sixty something squares of it 6 bed/6bath/4lounge sort of thing) south of Brissy.

They were "nice", but I felt I could never call them "home".

I guess this thread is about the "best compromise" between affordability and "dream value", and at this very moment, I am being attracted more and more towards a 3 br aprtment in the docklands every time I clean the house or work in the garden!

Ok. I'll retract/update what I said before. I reckon I could buy a very nice home in Adelaide/Brisbane/Perth or Hobart for 1/3rd to 1/2 the price of my Sydney place. Not 1/4.

I wonder if sandstone homes in Adelaide sneakily went through a boom the last couple of years? Anybody have those stats?

We stuck our necks out and bought our dream home in 1979.

Great for bringing up kids, and still great now we are retired, luckily it is all on one level with a huge backyard. Only gets a bit squeezy when family come to stay, but we can fit in 6 adults and 5 kids without too much trouble. Luckily one daughter lives nearby, if we had to add 5 more people it would get interesting!

    Downsize? Not likely!

As soon as we're into retirement, love to live in North or South QLD like Cairns/GoldCoast in winter and autumn/spring in Sydney. Apartment is ok no need to do weedings or lawns

We just hosted 7 adults 4 kids last week - but managed to fit them all in the bedrooms/study without anyone out in the lounge :)
