Sussan Ley MP for Albury/Health Minister has has been asked for a please explain for buying an IP on the Gold Coast whilst on official business.

    Linky

Is her story that it was an impulse buy up scratch?

Should pollies or public servants be allowed to undertake leisure activities outside of their official duties?

Worse still, she had to the gall to claim the entire daily allowance for her accompanying partner, an over gernerous $10/day!!!!

What is the parliamentary allowance system coming to if the partner is only entitled to an extra $10/day?

    Could be an impulse buy.
I seem to remember @wylie going for a walk and buying a house!
And it seems she knew the vendor.

It might well be an impulse buy, but it doesn't look great....

800k is a lot of dough for an IP....
Also the vendor is a big donor to the MPs party....

From a PR perspective the battlers HATE this stuff....an MP is able to casually buy an 800k property whilst they are flat out paying rent.....

I agree! The problem is in its perception....

@Gockie bought a ppor on impulse

$800k doesn't get much more than a newish 2 bed flat within 10km of the Sydney CBD, it doesn't come close for a 3 bedder.

It doesn't appear to be an impulse buy.

Talk about a storm in a tea cup. So she bought an IP while on a biz trip...really, and this makes the front page of our news. And now there is a big debate over whether it was an impulse buy or not--as if that makes it better. Surely we need some perspective as there are much bigger political issues to worry about.

She bid at auction while up there.
I'm guessing a few people here might know involved prior to bidding at auction eg loan pre approval, deposits, pay slips etc
Bidding takes 10 min. Was she actually at the Auction? Or sometime biding on her behalf.

It's just more dregs in news with the have nots screaming "800k" and "politician"

How many of these pollies are "rorting" and how many are utilising their time away to see places or do things in their off time?

How many private companies milk and rort which in turns drives up prices of other things.

Are the poor pollies being unfairly treated by Joe halfwit?

And zero regrets here. And I didn't lose my job over it. Bonus. :) Are females more likely to impulse buy?

The schedule of allowances is extensive (but what some people call rorts). There's little things like travel allowance (accommodation, meals, air fares/taxis/limousines/hire car etc) or the department arranges tge trip & pays the bills & the polly still gets a living away allowance. They possibly get an allowance for clothing & payment over their salary to attend the function out of normal hours as well.

It doesn’t just apply to regional pollies but all pollies when they are required to be away from home.

If an employee is required to travel, do they expect to be paid and compensated for being away from home? Do they expect to work around the clock or be able to do your own thing between scheduled appointments?

What is the creation of an independent review going to achieve - that they have spent all the money and allowances that they're entitled to?

So it's all standard stuff but this one had a shopping receipt for an ip of $800k which likely took 30 min and between duties.

Pretty tough that's she's been pushed AKA resigned, so that the gub is seen to doing something about it. Thats her career and livelihood up in smoke. I'm not sure where she goes from here but from the snippets i saw of her she seemed like a good country straight shooter and focused on her role. Have they got rid of one of the good guys by appeasing the muppets?
When I've worked away you fulfil your duties/ responsibilities then it's your time. If it means you have a break during the day and work later so be it.it all comes out in the wash, some people on wages cannot comprehend i guess

More like it fails 'the pub test'. If the pub dweller with aspirations of getting off the dole in time to get the full pension can't get the ministerial salary and benefits why should the elected polly get it?

How many employees rid off their employers? Years ago, I was at a Confetence. I and 3 others caught the one taxi from the CBD to the Airport. We all got a receipt for the full amount. Four employers refunded that taxi fare.

And don't get me started about smokers!!!

And then there are all those tax payers rorting the tax system.

And don't get me started about those property investors with negative gearing, depreciation claims, ...

TBH, I don't believe there is anyone who is 100% honest, 100% sqeekly cleam, never ever stretched the truth/done anything wrong, ...

Some get their knickers in a knot when they see high profile and/or rich people do it.

Hehe. I suppose I shouldn't have asked! Though my partner had to agree to the PPOR purchase and thankfully he did. We both love it. :)

You met my wife but you haven't seen her in action re: shopping.

She is something to behold. She has a secondary credit card in case she burns out the primary one :) :).
