This is the subject of many debates in brisbane real estate. Mixed views from the media on this.

If Parramatta can be a city, why not Brisbane?

Sydney & Melbourne are the only two true cities with economies diverse enough that they are not subject to regional influences. Brisbane/Perth are still rural outposts with their economies and fortunes being tied to mining and agriculture so they ride other cycles and prices suffer accordingly.

I would argue your point of Brisbane and Perth being rural outposts.

    Perth market has declined
    Brisbane market has increased

    Why is this?

Yes it isn't as busy as Syd or Melb but it is hardly a rural outpost/country town.

Toowoomba I would call a country city.

No way. 2 million plus live in and around Brissie. Include the Sunny and Gold Coast and its more like 3+ million.

Darwin, Hobart, Townsville, Newcastle, Cairns...sure! But not Brissie, it is just too big.

It's a tier 2 city. Needs to come a long way to become a "city" like Syd or Melbourne.
Canberra and Brisbane are very similar - both are oversized country towns with many of the benefits of cities.

Remember Regional "towns" are not worth investing in. Y'all should keep pouring your $ into Sydney and Melbourne and leave Brizz to us toothless hicks.

Umm.. CBD with multi high-rise commercial and residential developments, major commerce/industrial corps based there, population over 1.5M. Major Domestic and International airports, considerable public transport...

    quite the country town!!!

i disagree on 2 accounts here:
    1. Canberra has a very different look and feel than brisbane
    2. Brisbane has much more private enterprise than canberra, and generally much more non singular industry as well.
list goes on...cant categorise both in the same basket...but do agree that both are substantially behind sydney and melbourne, especially in the jobs category ( choice, type, number, companies that hire etc)
As a brisbanite, its insulting to be compared with canberra :):)

i dont see much tumbleweed in the cbd thesedays. I thought thats a tell-tale sign of 'rural outposts'.
I dont see toothless hicks roaming the streets either......and no one supports the donald....thats all in logan :)

Plus the ute with a confederate bumper sticker.

But seriously, a city of 2.2 million people with a greater urban area population of 3 million plus.
No country town, maybe a little laid back but the recent infrastructure improvements are huge. It's not a city state like Perth or Adelaide though as Qld is a much the more decentralised state and extends beyond Noosa Heads believe it or not.

Ha! I remember about 20 years ago, I was heading to the Gabba and someone drove past in their US Dodge Charger.. a 'genuine' General Lee replica! The driver looked more like Uncle Jesse though.

They did that to stop people from out west coming into the Sydney CBD - sorta like a Sydney theme park complete with tall buildings, mini-harbour, barracks, exaggerated parklands, a few government agencies and a government house.

Don't know who it will stop in Qld.

There is no definition in the poll question.. And compare it to what you will...ie whichever city/town etc
