My 3 year old king mattress came with a fixed pillowtop which was fabulous to start with, sagged significantly within 6 months. So annoyed as our 20 year old queen mattress, now in the spare room, is more comfortable to sleep on.

I tried many things - eggshell foam and removable softening tops - flipping it and sleeping on the hard bottom (with the removable foam and tops) - flipped it back over last week to see if the memory foam has un-sagged - but finally - after an absolutely last straw, of waking up with an aching back from sleeping in a "memory foam" hollow, I googled ... and then cut the damn thing off.

Put the eggshell back on (I like a soft bed) and the softening tops/mattress protector and lay on it ... OMG ... felt so good I can't wait until I have an excuse to nap.

The google did point out a few interesting facts/general consensus - that pillowtops feel great in the store, are purely designed to get people to buy and generally fail within months - that beds are now made to last 5-7 years for greater turnover, which is hard to get the head around for those of us who bought beds to last the traditional 10-20 - do not buy bed brands beginning with "s" (mine is a Sealy - bugger)

Now I have to work out how to dispose of a big lump of useless foam stuff

There is a massive warehouse fire containing lots of toxic crap blazing in Melbourne at the moment. So if you hurry....

Makin mattresses an Australian company make the pillowtop separately so you can turn the mattress and replace the pillow top as needed. Plus a 5 year comfort warranty. I just bought this one, made in Brisbane.

I have an old school matress that is over 25 years old. It's still very comfortable to sleep on. When us oldies say "they don't make them like they used to", it's for a reason!

Pop out a few kids. You'll be so tired, you'll be happy to sleep even on a sack of potatoes.

At 51? Still capable but methinks not.

Been caring for kids for my entire life with hubby - first his lot from his first marriage and then our joint one ...

The bed looks so low now. Next investment - a new poofy doona :D

We bought a Bellissimo last year and each night it gets even more comfortable. Go on Lizzie, do yourself a favour.

Could you turn the off cut into a Luxury foam dog bed? My 20 yr old bed has been giving me pain for the past month, I dread choosing a new bed.
