Nah, you're definitely not! I have all the gear and no idea.... and I'm not being modest - I just don't seem to have a creative bone in my body, sadly! :(

But it's still fun to try. :)

I also like macro photography, so I have a few photos of things that are really small like this...

    Thanks @hobo
Do you reckon taking those photography classes would help? I often thought about signing up to them...

    Also what camera you using?

    @Leo2413

I think a photography class would definitely be useful to help someone understand:
    a) general photographic principles (aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc); and
    b) the basic creative principles (how to frame a shot, concepts such as negative space etc).

I did one years ago and it helped on the technical side but sadly, even knowing the "Rule of Three" doesn't help if you can't SEE a photo. :(

I use Nikon gear - I like the dark side. :p :p But I know Canon gear is great, too. I don't have experience with / can't recommend much past that.

Started with a D70, now on a D300. I like that Nikon hasn't (yet) changed their lens mount, so the older (awesome) lenses still work with modern bodies. I also have a few ex-Xray lenses (eg Rodenstock) that I want to adapt to the Nikon mount to take trippy macro pics - a future project. :D

I wouldn't worry too much about classes to start off with. There's heaps of information available on Youtube or elsewhere online with all the basics. There's free books available on Kindle, though they seem to be not so much for beginners. Udemy do good courses for a reasonable price- this one is at $19 and is quite good:
Photography Course: Your Complete Guide to Digital Photography - Udemy

And I wouldn't worry too much about the equipment to start off with either. Start with your phone. Take lots of pictures. Learn about seeing and taking a good picture first. If you're starting to be happy with your pictures, then it's time to look at a camera.

Really, many cameras these days can take great quality pictures- my Samsung took better pictures in low light than my $600 camera, and it was possible to give it some of the control which until recently was only available in a reasonable camera. They just don't do telephoto. But using a phone will teach you about seeing the picture.

Have a look at @JD86 's shots. S/he's done something special just by changing the viewpoint (in the first shot), getting the special light (shot 2), making something special out of something ordinary (shot 3). While a good camera will enable you to make a good shot better, no camera will make a bad shot into a good one.

Learn, look, see what pictures you like and what makes them special. Practice with your phone to see how you can change what you see, and to make good compositions. If that works, it will be worth while paying for courses (where feedback can be really important) and for good camera gear.

@geoffw I agree - it's all about the vision and much less about the equipment (hence my issue :p). In most conditions, a good photographer can take a great pic with a very basic camera. But I still think it's useful to understand what makes a good photo, and the tech stuff behind the screen (and I neglected to explicitly say that online learning/courses are of course an great option).

I do think that many photos posted (not here, just generally) have an serious level of Photoshop applied, and maybe newcomers to photography don't realise this and think harshly of their pics, in comparison. I have NFI about Photoshop but have forever meant to learn. I'm sure I could make at least a couple of my photos look acceptable if I had some skillz!

Photos were being enhanced well before photoshop. Examples here start from 1860:
