Details of a proposed upgrade to the Petrie Roundabout have been published. It is planned for construction to start in 2020 and finish in 2021.

    There is a consultation period.

    Full details are here:

Design generally looks good to me and I think it will be a big improvement, however I think they should consider a pedestrian over bridge that provides better access between the town and the station.

What's the deal with the uni? I just drove past the region on the weekend and it doesn't look like any constructions started? And it's supposed to open in 2020??

It is one building at this stage plus any supporting roads. It is only the one foundation building. 12 months should be adequate time to construct it.

Work is now underway at USC Moreton Bay

How long do you think it takes to build the buildings themselves? That is a quick job compared to getting all the roads and supporting infrastructure ready. 2020 is still plenty of time to build the site.

This DA has been submitted for 50-52 Connors Street. It's for 24 dwellings ( units and rooming accomodation ). I guess given future student population.

DA just popped up for 2 Gardiner Street at Lawnton.
    • Urban Neighbourhood Zoning (up to 21m height)
    • 598sqm
    • 12 Units, 12 parking spaces.
Another good example of the potential possibilities for urban-neighbourhood zoning ( still subject to council approval ).

I really wonder with advances to technology and the implication of that with regards to access to education, whether a physical space for a university (and university accommodation) will be so important in the not too distant future.
When studying 20 years ago, I had to physically attend lectures and tutorials - students these days can login remotely to access this same content. Assignments and exams are submitted online and there's such a push for (and uptake of) distance education by some universities (and schools for that matter) that I think this could be a crystal ball insight into the future of learning. The technology is there for even practical subjects (that once needed a certain amount of time spent in a lab) to have their content replicated in an online or virtual environment.
I'm not saying that this university isn't a fantastic thing for this region, I just think that 10-15 years down the track, there'll be a lot of investors stuck holding properties with little to no students filling them.

I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts on this topic!

I would think that has already been factored into the design. The campus itself is nowhere near as large as other campuses.

Parts of the area are also earmarked for commerical use. Universities also need to obtain much of their funding through commercialisation of intellectual property and collaborative business initiatives. I used to teach in the unversity setting and also periodically have an involvement in the assesment and accreditation processes for degrees (from an industry stakeholder perspective), so have a current insight.

The full development scheme is here, so there are university, retail, commercial, residential areas. Importantly there will be retail and commercial development in both the older part of Petrie and in the old Mill site.

    https://www.dsdmip.qld.gov.au/resources/plan/pda/the-mill-pda-development-scheme.pdf

Note the following from the above:

"At its core, The Mill PDA will be anchored by a full service university campus. Development in the PDA will utilise the opportunity provided by the university to support the creation of a vibrant and exemplar health and knowledge precinct that is cognisant and respectful of its heritage and environmental context. The university campus will be central to the transformation of the remainder of the PDA into a number of vibrant mixed-use places that deliver a diverse range of education, health, retail, residential, recreation, commercial and environmental uses."
So a number of elements factored into the development scheme to create other employment opportunities in the area.

The Mill area will become a significant commericial centre type environment catering to neighbouring suburbs - Petrie, Lawton, Kallangur, Bray Park, Strathpine in particular.
