No - but vaccination is keeping a lot of people out of hospital who would otherwise have been very sick.

Don't forget there is still Delta around - so vaccination is still critical and WA isn't due to reach 90% double dose until Feb 13th or so.

Case numbers have gone up but that doesn't mean that SA "let it rip".

    1. Masks still needed in indoor settings- SA did that

    3. Make sure that unvaccinated are limited in movements- SA did that
    4. Booster whilst will not protect everyone will slow down infection rates- SA have been doing that
    5. Open the doors slowly....not let it rip....learnt from NSW, VIC, SA, and Qld- SA did that. They restricted who could come into the state with testing and vaccination requirements.

Despite all the rhetoric about learning to live with Covid we've still got many with a Covid zero mentality. Unless you go into a full blown lockdown for months/years, put all the unvaccinated in quarantine camps and completely close state/international borders you're going to have Covid.

I would say that SA has handled it better than other states by using restrictions and that is what WA is using to help determine their plan to work out the slowest way to ease off the bandaid and cause the least amount of deaths.

Sure. It's just frustrating that we have this sentiment that Australia has "let it rip" when we're still living with dozens of restrictions. At some stage WA will have to open up whether it be a month, year, decade etc. In the meantime it's impossible to make plans as there is no date and the date can seemingly change at any time.

I don't know the numbers but I assume the original number of the first and second doses in WA, as it was in other States, was AstraZeneca and was first targetting towards age risk and immunocompromised groups. AZ has now been shown to have zero protection against infection with Omicron (although the need for hospitalisation and death is diminished) and a mRNA booster dose is necessary for this. It would need a large effort to drill down the figures to work out who has had what type of vaccine and when and what increased risk to the health system, as well as the general population overall, this would impose.

These factors may have been a light bulb moment and increased the concerns by the WA Government about opening up on 5 February.

It's only a guess on my part though.

These groups were targeted early, and should be overdue for their booster.
I had AZ in March and June, Pfizer booster in December.

Yes. However, I don't know how many took that opportunity and when. It was awfully slow in some areas across Australia if I recall correctly.

ATAGI issued its first statement on the need for boosters on 8 October 2021 if I read it correctly.

    List of ATAGI statements.

Not too well:(…. Looks like my Feb trip is off the table. I reckon at this rate I would have moved to Melb in August and Perth border still closed.

Its all your fault…. You jinxed it

Yes most of the first rollout eligibles had AZ and most of them only became eligible in December to get a booster as that was 6mths from the second dose which was 12 weeks after their first dose. I know a lot of people in phase 1 and there was no options for them before December unlike other states which opened boosters earlier due to case loads.

With the booster eligibility bought down from 6 to 5mths and now again to 4mths a lot more AZ people and others are now eligible and being highly encouraged to get their booster.
