Some people share this on the internet...
    No taking of responsibility...
Realise the government can't pay that much welfare out...
Not enough taxpayers and revenue and people are now living much too long to support our aging population to do this sort of thing...

I have seen that on failbook a few times, was going to comment but then thought why bother. Some people just don't get it.

That type of entitlement attitude really gets on my nerves.

The other thing that gets on my nerves is the cash economy and associated undeclared income.

So, do you refuse to claim Medicare rebates for yourself or your family? Do PCers with kids, refuse family tax benefit?

Or do you accept these benefits as your due? If so, then you too are taking welfare!

Let's see how many put their money where their mouth is ( aka 'walking the talk') with regard to welfare for themselves or family.

It's not the fact people claim welfare that is available to them. It's the attitude that "I worked, now I deserve to be looked after and pampered when I'm old" . No, you worked to pay for the roads you drove on, the schools you sent your kids to and the healthcare you need. It doesn't mean you are now entitled to anything more than the basics if you failed to get your **** together the last 40 years. The pension is a safety net, not meant for anything more than that.

I don't think that is actually what the poster is saying.

However, I know a few people with the view that we shouldn't look after the elderly...until it looks like their elderly mother is going to miss out on benefits; then somehow it's alright...

Is it the 'old' that you object to? Old people are easy to have a go at, especially the ones you don't know.

Personally, I know someone who has lived the life of Riley, had the best of everything, and always 'lived above their means' and now has been made redundant... just below retirement age..
Cant and Wont stop spending and also forgot to save 'for a rainy day'
    Is now seriously facing homelesness.
I feel ill, worrying about it, and then every so often I think.. its making me ill...
Perhaps I think it's my child of migrant background that makes me feel that way..

Don't worry all the older people in my family have this same sense of entitlement regarding the pension too. They've worked all their life, none of them are poor by any means but they still think it is ok to live in a 2 million dollar home with ample assets and are dirty with the government because they won't get a few hundred from the pension just because...

I tell them the same I wrote above, it's a safety net, not play money.

Which is why all the middle class family tax welfare is so shocking.

Really, people with jobs should be paying for their own kids not taking government handouts- as I'm sure you will agree.

I worked until I was 68 plus still maintain rental houses. When a tenant moves out I am the one that repaints it and cleans up. To get someone in to do this means less money for me to live on.
I do not qualify for any government help and I have known this since being 21 when we built our second house ourselves we knew from then on we had to ensure we had sufficient funds to retire
I was back at work after having my son within 6 weeks as there was not any maternity leave. We survived

What annoys me is the people rorting the system and proudly stating they have tricked the system by putting their money in the children's names and now qualify for govt pension as well as their defined benefits
I believe Welfare is for people who need it particularly those who have been unable to work due to illness

Agree but I don't think anyone is upset because people get a pension. It's this entitlement mentality that it should be more than what it is or they should get it no matter what "because they worked"
