Anyone or know anyone who invests or collects grange?

just got some spam from dan murphys saying their latest grange price is the greatest ever and once in a lifetime,
a quick google search says its about $80 cheaper than first choice

am thinking of getting a case just for fun,
just dont want to overpay from day 1 :)

For me, it would be a bad investment.

If I bought a bottle (or even a case), I would drink the lot (I am sure a few 'friends' would offer to help).

I don't believe empty bottles are worth very much :) :).

A great way to destroy Net Worth.

About to make the purchase for 1 or 2 - it's a cracker vintage 2012. for $695 can't see it being much cheaper.

Tried a $100 per bottle of Chardonnay once - not ten times better than my usual poison.

I find with alcohol anything more than double the average price starts to become a ****.

ie, average bottle of scotch 40-$50. Excellent bottle $80-$100 higher than that and it's all subjective swill IMO.

I have seen grange go for less the 20 dollars at the auctions, and there is a lot of over-excitable fanatics that invest in this product investment wise you will end up drinking the whole case, the only value is the stamped wooden case they come in...

Because they were not good vintages. 10 & 12 best vintages in years.

I had 3 1976 Granges, sold one for profit, one at an equivalent loss, and just drank the 3rd. Pretty decent wine but definitely not the best.

Currently hold a clinic'd 1983 in a secure cellar but it's not worth that much. The Chateau d'Yquem keeping it company will probably overtake it in value, but as others said, it's all a bit of a **** :D

Haven't drank a heap of Grange, probably around 4 different vintages. Personally I prefer Henschke - Hill of Grace Shiraz. But again not like I've drank much of that either.

Much better value for money <$40-$100

Friend of mine tried to open up a HoG with me at 4 or 5am after a big night out.
It has now been put aside for proper consumption.
    Believe it's an '05

Haha agreed really should be left a bit longer, but knowing my mate he's likely to get stuck into it.

I would prefer to be there with him drinking it early than not at all :) haha

Reminds me of an investment banker party where someone shouted the whole table a 2006 Grange (the latest release at the time) and everyone declared that Grange tastes like crap.

Had a '96 at Rockpool Bar and Grill last Christmas...great stuff, but not $1450 worth...i wasnt buying that night...

Equivalent old vines Barossa stuff can be had from the likes of Standish and others for around $100/bottle. Penfolds under TWE ownership is now a Luxury company with the attendant poor value....Bin 389/407/150 still worth buying (just...) but thats it.

I still think the St Herni is great drinking, can still be picked up at the right price.

Rockford Basket Press, fill up my allocation each year @ ~$70 per bottle.
Turkey Flat, pretty good value for money ~$40 per bottle
Not BV but Kay Brothers ~$75

It was a public trustee auction -I think he was a "QC" and had several rooms within the chambers with 1000 of different wines-problem was he never had a will-and when he passed away and all his cars everything ended up on the auction floor..make sure you have a rock solid will in place..
