Ive enrolled in uni. Yay! Anxiety galore.
A lot of material and books are in PDF and I’m planning to get a PDF reader. Something I can use to read the books while I’m commuting.

Any good suggestions? I thought about iPad 4th gen or 6gen. ($400-$600). But was wondering if there is something better.

I don’t really play games and will probably just use it as PDF reader. Any suggestions appreciated.

I have a Kobo which is really good for ebooks, but it doesn't work well with PDFs because of the sizing. But for epub and mobi files, i think, it is great.

iPad 6th gen is great, and for $449 retail, it’s very good

Yes. I have a Kobo too. Battery life is outstanding and quality is great. It is horrible when it comes to PDF though. Just bad.

Thanks @Gockie might give iPad a try. Trying to find a cheap one. Where did you find that retail price?

Sorry! It’s a little more. But I’m sure you could buy some Big W gift cards at a discount (maybe via entertainment card?) and maybe buy it with that.
My work also offers discounts at JB Hifi B4F00FC1-340D-4E79-B40A-73EF1100410B.png

I bought my dad one of these for his birthday and I really like it. Not sure if you want something this big but I found it great for PDFs, Word and Excel. Just shop around. I got mine from office works. HN also sell them. And Good Guys.

Well, there's always your laptop if you don't need the portability.

You can get a small discount on iPads through Apple's education program

Don't get second hand. They can break down and you've got no come back. I'd be wary of even apple certified refurbished.

There are far cheaper alternatives if all the requirement is just to read PDFs. You can get a no name tablet 7-10" for $100-$150.

    Sure.

But I've had trouble with no names.

I had a cheap tablet broke permanently after being dropped 15cm. My iPad has had drops from 60cm without breaking.

If it's something your going to carry around a lot, get something robust. Other companies make good tablets. If you're staying at home, something cheap is fine.

Thanks @Gockie that looks reasonable. Will give it a try.

Wow. Sub $300. I love Samsung. Will check them out.

I had a no name. It’s not worth the money. Constantly freezes. Quality is absolutely horrible. Ended up chucking it out after 3 weeks. It’s the reason why I’m looking for a new one

Samsung obviously have a good name. and it has an advantage over the iPad with the ability to use an SD card for documents, photos, music etc.

Sometimes you have to juggle apps around with just 16GB, but an extra 16 is probably not worth it.

There's a free app called '@voice' for android. It's very good, you can change so many settings.. you can even change it's accent etc.

Yes absolutely. It is also more flexible than iPad as you can do pretty much everything including edit PDF (based on what I read online).

If it was a phone I would probably prefer Apple over Samsung. But for a tablet, since I can’t afford a Surface, I think Samsung might be the second best.

Fair enough. How about name brand, but not Apple eg. Samsung. I have a Galaxy Tab A 10" which is a bit big to use while commuting but still much cheaper than equivalent Apple. My wife's 7" Galaxy Tab A would be perfect and is only $180ish. Reliability has been awesome over the couple of years we have owned these.
