Granted - not much emerged from the release of the 2016 "Panama Papers" but, I suspect, the world is a different place this time around. 400 Australian's named - ATO taking a keen interest - things are going to be rather interesting Pandora Papers: Andrej Babiš, Tony Blair, King Adbullah, Sachin Tendulkar, Shakira, Claudia Schiffer, Monica Belucci, Julio Iglesias named in banking leak Deputy Tax Commissioner Will Day, who heads the Serious Financial Crime Taskforce, told the Financial Review: “We are aware that the ICIJ is today reporting they have released data referred to as the Pandora Papers. “We will certainly look at this data set and compare it with the data we already have to identify any potential connections.”
Glad u started this one. I made a clumsy attempt in tv shows thread. So one thing is that despots and super rich think Australia is a 'destination' for their money, whether it be clean or require laundry. At least that's what 4 corners was implying. Hard enough to ward off interstate buyers without despots and super rich weighing in....
I was surprised by that - I didn't think Australia was particularly attractive tax-wise, but presumably it is attractive as a stable western economy to park funds in assets.
I was also surprised......I get the feeling we are slack about super rich doing what they like, The tax situation already sorted by the offshore shell company
It happening in every country...but show some countries like Israel...Italy...Spain seem to like tax avoidance games the best. Surprise ...surprise....and lots of world leaders also named.... There are ample opportunities to minimize tax here...comparatively we are low tax country. These clowns should just pay their tax...hope the ATO goes after them!
Another ABC beat up. First establish the moral narrative, then link it to somone else's illegal activity as if there's no difference. The other issue is that the journalists consortium does what journ's normally do: Do not release the full data and what they don't want is never seen. They will milk it for headlines and then make available a smaller edited version for download. Compared to say wikileaks which dumps all the data.
Was there really anything we didn’t know released! And trying to tie in corrupt individuals with others who were not corrupt is poor form. I thought it was the laziest journalism I have seen on 4 corners. What I got out of it was: Not a single Aussie politician was involved. All 336 were from overseas The company was not corrupt, they just had some clients who were corrupt. The company like our Aussie banks facilitated things that should not have been allowed . Everybody liked the Aussie guy who ran the company. The guy who was in jail was there for perverting the course of justice not for anything to do with the story. Maybe none of the 400 Aussies did anything wrong. So I felt like I had been tricked by click bait.
