Hi, the oven is reportedly not working in one of my IPs and the quotes for new ovens that I have received are higher than my liking. I am thinking of buying a cheap second hand oven and get it installed.

Can someone help me do that and is that a good strategy? The property is in North Brisbane.

I'm now contemplating removing the oven after the current people move out.
Due to the proximty to the Uni, we always get young international students. They don't use oven or dishwasher, despite numerous reminders

Try appliances online and look for a local electrician. Would be able to install for around $150 - mark and appliances online is cheaper than electrician purchasing through wholesaler.

Buying second hand you have no warranty and no idea what problems you are buying. Appliances online also offers extended warranty for their appliances

What prices have you been quoted and for what size oven?

Between $770 to $980 for a 60cm oven installed and older one removed.

You could try a stand alone, bench top, plug in oven. Much cheaper but not as fancy.

Pretty much standard in the Druitt. Best to bolt it down so it doesn't get tossed around during a domestic.

I'm paying $270 just to have the fan repaired in an oven for an IP on the east side.

Plus, i'm not completely sure a second hand one can be claimed on taxes.

Sounds ok around $750-800. A Chef (which I believe is made by Westinghouse) the lowest I've seen in Brisbane is about $600 plus install - $150. You can buy cheaper no name brands for $300-400 but the Aussie made should last a long time, I'd expect 10 years.

I'm an electrician in north Brisbane myself and agree with ^
If you buy second hand who knows how long you have before a element/thermostat/controller/ any of the other dozen's of components that make an oven run fails. And then you will be paying an electrician to service it which will start at $100 just to show up. I buy all my white goods from appliances online and chuck my % on just like most other electricians.

Murphy's law with second hand is that they will go wrong within a year or two, seemingly every time.

In your PPOR you might consider mucking around with second hand (we did), but in a rental it's not worth the drama and potential extra expense over the next ten years of service life.
