If there was a choice between am item that indicates "organic" vs one without, more often than not I would buy the organic option. Got me thinking tho, is there a misuse of the term organic?

    Thanks.

There are different degrees of 'organic' IIRC.

Are they certified organic? from a self-certified farm? Or just grown without pesticides?

Yes - confusing. So would like to know more. There was a farmers market in Gladesville that shut, the fruit and veg were "chemical free".

Perhaps, to start, how to tell if a product just stamped "organic" into their label, how to tell if it is a certified company/product/produce?

If it is certified organic, there will be a details of the certifying body (like ACO) and cert number.

Depending on the certfying body, there have varying standards on what can be used (pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, minerals). By far the toughest IMHO would be certified biodynamic.

Our church has 2 farms - one is certified ACO (sold at farmers markets), the other we have not bothered (no real benefit in doing so ~ mainly for ourselves) although the practice at both is same (no pesticides, no manufactured fertilisers - we use composted manure etc, no herbicides).

The certification record keeping is quite arduous - you have to report what you grew where, the harvested yield, materials used etc etc....and the inspector has access all areas to check your sheds, stores etc

"Organic" can be taken to extremes. One tenant has a paleo restaurant, and won't even use mulch that's not organic.
