Old subdivisions where your front yard is common property. Can this be fixed?

A couple of places I’ve looked at for PPOR in Melbourne have the whole of the front yard and your private driveway as common property.
This is for a 2 on the block, original house at front and then another built in the back. Both private and not like a typical 3-4 townhouse block where you’d expect most driveways are common property.
I’m quite surprised as it’s the original house that is completely separated from the back one. How can anyone want to buy something where even what you thought was your private front yard is actually common property? Was this normal back in the 1950’s & 60’s
Can it be fixed if you apply to your local council?

Is it common property or does one property have a right of way?

    It is common property.

The set up is exactly like a house on it’s own. There is actually no shared driveway and the driveway to get to the house behind is on another side of the fence and only the people behind would use it. Original house has its own front yard, driveway & carport.
