I did not realise NRL had made a decision to scrap National Anthem, but due to backlash now reinstated.... all happened in matters of hours

Lots of big dollars here and sponsors would possibly pull the pin.

I think we should keep politics out of sports. I know that old chestnut

I would not want to go down the US road

Why though? It's Australia. It's the national anthem. What am I missing? What sponsors are objecting to this, is the real question?

its a game being played between 2 states - shouldn't they be singing state anthems if anything?

People don't know the words for the national anthem, so trying to sing it is futile.

Even if there was a state anthem, it would be even worse for knowing the words.

People at a state of origin game know a Mexican wave far better than the Australian national anthem.

Do they still sing it at school? We were all taught to sing it during assembly, but that was back in the 90's.

People need to have a bit of pride in their country.

State of origin is a privilege given to the select few who have the talent to play.

On a national stage they should be proud to play before our flag.

For those indigenous players who see that as recognition of the tine white men came and invaded them, I guess they don’t have an issue when the game introduced by white men, means that their bank accounts are invaded with white men’s money.

You can’t have it both ways

Maybe I am ignorant but I see no issue with our anthem, it is quite inclusive of everyone. On the other hand I am all for changing the date of Australia Day as there are definitely negatives attached to that day.

I am for ditching the national anthem and replace it with the one ABC TV are playing, you know, the one that begins 'We are one, ta ra ra, we are Australian' and shows the faces of all our people, black, brindle and white. Makes me feel glad to be Australian as well as doing a little dance ... :D

One of my most memorable experiences was going to the paralympics in 2000. They bussed in school kids from all over the place to fill the various stadiums. Sitting in Stadium Australia with close to 100000 school kids belting out the national anthem (and knowing all the words!) was pretty moving actually.

Nice sentence, but do you actually have a counter thought, or are you just one of those perpetually outraged types?

I don't know about that. I think they know the chorus, so there should be no issue with singing that, at least.

    This!

Seriously, if you don't have enough pride in your Country to sing the National Anthem, you should be removed from the team. Sport is not, and should not be the place to push an agenda.

Not many Indigenous people have done well enough to make it up the ranks of the sports elite. Even those who have, have done it tough.

You people will never be happy. Changed the national anthem in 1984 after a plebiscite and so all people would feel included. Those who dont like it will whinge about anything and everything and any national anthem.. . They dont have to sing it, best if they dont then every-one will know their character or lack of it. While the majority who approve should be allowed to proudly listen and sing if they wish, and not be dictated to by the self centered who want to take, whine and be victims. Any way if the English are so bad why are they playing an English game, and not the indigenous variety of football other than picking and choosing what to be outraged over for convenience.

Yeah l've thought the same 200%. But with a strong aboriginal presence included and some didgeridoo through the music too.
Now that, that would be an Australian anthem to be proud of.
