'The residential rental vacancy rose to 2.5 percent in Newcastle in January but is still lower than in Sydney and Wollongong. The latest Real Estate Institute NSW rental vacancy report shows Newcastle vacancies jumped 0.6 per-centage points in January to their highest level in four months.
The vacancy rate was 1.4 per cent 12 months ago and 2.9 per cent in September. Vacancies rose 0.1 per cent, to 1.8 percent, across the rest of the Hunter.'

We seem to have gotten very used to the idea of very low vacancy rates over the last few years. Before that, a 3% vacancy rate was considered "balanced". :)
