i used to have a Sealy mattress and it has a mixture of a memory foam and other paddings, I've been told. Comparing to what I have now, (had to sell to downsize) that mattress was actually good for my back which I injured during training way back. It was worth the money spent I would say.

Some questions you can ponder on are - How long do you want the mattress to serve you ? How comfortable do you want it to be ? What kind of mattresses have you slept on thus far ? Read carefully the maximum weight clause on mattresses' warranty. $1k may not bring good results.

I have a tempurpedic 21 inches, I think, which I personally have been very happy with. Bought it for a steal at around $2k from HN. I am a very big guy and find it very comfortable where as my partner not as much. Mum visited us recently and hated the mattress, only because she is used to sleeping on organic/unprocessed cotton filled mattresses (which from memory will take at least three strong people to move from one room to the other). To each their own. I dedicated a few weekends with lying on each mattress type I was interested in for at least 15 minutes in various stores and kept a log of my results (including details of the mattress as every retailer has a different name for the category of a mattress) on a piece of paper. But then I take my sleep seriously.

Memory foam will get hot in summer - we live in Darwin and most nights the aircon is on so it doesn't bother me. 100% latex is also a similarly good option with no heat issues I am told. You are only kidding yourself if you think using a memory foam topper over a cheap mattress will give the same long lasting comforts as compared to say a tempur.

Still think Tempur is a bit overpriced ...
If memory foam is in consideration, I'd suggest to consider Ergoflex as well Memory Foam Mattress - 3rd Gen Memory Foam Mattress by Ergoflex, Deluxe HD Visco-Elastic Specialist

That works, but sometimes you can get out of phase, this causes all sorts of interesting problems.

Thanks to this thread I decided to give the Koala mattress a try. I also looked at a few other threads (including Whirlpool) where the reviews are mixed but it did appear that the Product Review consumer reviews are so positive because koala provide a gift card if you give a positive review (although post purchase Koala haven’t sent me any communication about doing this). Regardless I decided to give it a shot, as it seems from the reviews I read it is relatively easy to return the mattress and obtain the full purchase price back, so I didn’t have much to lose.

To the mattress itself, I’ve found it very comfortable so far (has been about a week). It does seem like a well-built product, I would consider it somewhere around a medium to firm (I generally prefer firm but it really is a nice mattress so I’m not complaining yet). The delivery was extremely easy and when I purchased there was a $100 voucher on the website, so ended up paying $850 delivered. I feel it’s a fair price for a good mattress – given it’s so hard to actually know what you’re buying at a store, I’m happy so far. If anyone is looking at purchasing, they provided me a link which gives a new purchaser $75 off (disclaimer, they will also give me $50) so flick me a PM if you’d like the link (I don’t know if the discount is in addition to their periodic $100 discount codes).

I’ll provide another update in a few months, once I’ve really worked out whether it’s good over a longer period!

One very important thing to consider….
    Fire ******ants in Mattresses.

And, pretty soon there will be more eco and human friendly fire ******ants in mattresses when this company gets the nod in releasing the names of bedding companies under contract to purchase their "friendly" fire ******ants.

We are waiting for the new mattresses to come out with this product before buying a long term household item such as a mattress.

Got mine from www.ozmattress.com.au last year. Good reviews on whirlpool. I can't comment as I haven't had enough mattresses to provide a comparison, but it was a good price, no fuss and quick delivery.

Bought a Chiropedic pocket spring queen mattress with builtin latex comfort layer top for $650 just 2 weeks ago. Has 5 spring zones, is quite comfy & is Australian made....

Do you remember how much the king size went for by any chance?

Watch out for those "pillowtop" types. In the showroom you're blown away by the comfort level. It seems to have magical powers. You get the thing home and realise that because you sink into it, there is zero air flow around you, and you overheat.

Sorry to revive an old thread. Just bought my first investment and I'm considering getting a Sleeping Duck, it's cheaper than OzMattress but seems to have all the same features plus has some feature where you can change the firmness inside the mattress itself. Plus has the 100 night guarantee.
    @andrew_t How is your mattress?
I seem to be getting pounded with mattress Ads all over my facebook now, most notably from Koala - but highly sceptical of them given @Beyond Wealth 's comments about the reviews being paid for. No wonder there are so many. I don't even want to consider the main brands - I went into a Forty Winks and it was probably one of the worst experiences of my life, and the sales guy kept trying to sell me on a $3k bed.

    Appreciate any help!

A friend got a Koala mattress and was very happy with it. They do give you a pretty good free trial.

His mattress was delivered by a Sikh. Which would have made it his Sikh bed.
